This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.

Along with over a thousand other such satellites, about half of which are functioning, and all of which can be hit or at least have their orbits perturbed enough to cause problems.

GPS, weather, mapping, military, and civilian communications are major missions of these satellites.

If it is determined that it will hit the US, then we can send up an ICBM or two to break it up before it hits the atmosphere. The increased surface area will give the atmosphere, which is our best defense, more to work on.

In any case, it is not a “planet killer”.

They’ll probably know pretty accurately where it is going to hit in the weeks before impact.
