Had Michigan not been as close, the Democrats would have waited to spring this on us in the general election. Luckily we have it now and I hope Ohio voters are paying attention.
In July 2009, Mitt Romney wrote an op-ed in USA Today urging Barack Obama to usean individual mandate at the national level to control healthcare costs.
On the campaign trail now, Mitt Romney says the individual mandate is appropriate for Massachusetts, but not the nation. Repeatedly in debates, Romney has said he opposes a national individual mandate.
But back in 2009, as Barack Obama was formulating his healthcare vision for the country, Mitt Romney encouraged him publicly to use an individual mandate. In his op-ed, Governor Romney suggested that the federal government learn from Massachusetts how to make healthcare available for all.

Republicans are a little slow. Besides, it would help if there was just ONE conservative in the media that could help the party out.
And if you still believe all the bovine excrement that Romney's been saying during this campaign, I've got some beachfront property in Arizona I'd like to sell you.
I consider myself as fiscal & monetary conservative and I am in favor of mandates because ...... you're a blithering idiot.
Another George Soros approved candidate...
>> Was Heritage Foundation in favor of mandates?
Yes there ARE. That is why I dropped them from my support list. Not one cent will they get from me.
Why hasn’t Newt or Santorum beought this up in debates?!?!
“I am 100% against government run health service of any kind.”
Not according to your last statement. The two, the mandate and government run health services, are inseparable.
I have reconsidered it many times, and every year I become more conservative.Yet you support using the coercive power of the state to support progressive goals like universal coverage. We should also mandate a calorie count so that you don't have to pay for the social costs of obesity, right? Same logic, dirt bag.
Newt’s SuperPAC was too busy making cute cartoons about Romney sitting in a waiting room to bother to look into this, I guess. Actually, I seem to remember this being brought up a while back, maybe last year sometime, maybe in the debates. I know I heard he wrote this editorial a while back, just not sure where. It’s not too different from what Perry was already hitting him with over removing the line from his book about wanting other states to use Romneycare. This is federal, but the line of attack would end up sounding about the same.
Don't leave blanks, because it encourages people to "help out" and fill in a candidate later. Put in some guy in a minor party instead.
To my post above let me add that I am 100% in favor of PRIVATE insurance only. I am 100% against government run health service of any kind.Liar. You are 100% in favor of using the coercive power of the state to support progressive goals like unviersal coverage because you support government mandates to purchase insurance, which also entails the state supervision of the insurance industry as with RomneyCare and ObamaCare with their exchanges.
What's breaking about this? Romney is a statist and Obamacare was modeled after Romneycare.
One problem is the mandate is only a mandate on some people. Under Obamneycare (either one), those deemed unable to afford the mandate are still given free health care that the rest of us still pay for. And it came out a year or two ago that some of the people that would be eligible for the free care are upper-middle class and could afford it on their own.
If we’re going to mandate that hospitals pay for care of uninsured people without funding it, I agree it’s a problem. I would like to see the solution to that problem addressed rather than just hearing the negatives about what we don’t want to do. My opinion, those people who can’t pay their bills have to “wash the dishes” so to speak, do some kind of community service or fill a government job to make up for it. And if they do have a job, their wages should be garnished.
Easy...no more debates.
According to Allahpundit, one reason this is just now coming out is the original conveniently disappeared from the USA Today archive.
“I am in favor of mandates”
