Gingrich goes after Santorum on labor

MACON, Ga. - Newt Gingrich is about to launch his first paid attack against Rick Santorum in the form of a robo-call that accuses his rival of pandering to labor unions.

Starting Friday, 150,000 calls will be placed in Tennessee and Oklahoma. In the call, a woman's voice accuses Santorum of "[cozying] up to the labor union bosses" by voting against a national "right to work" bill that would have let workers opt out of paying union dues.

Gingrich, who is currently trailing Santorum in the polls in both states, has begun to attack the former senator's record on the trail, pointing to votes he made in support of labor unions while representing Pennsylvania.

"He voted for the unions over FedEx," Gingrich told a crowd in Gainesville on Wednesday night. "I suspect most folks in this state don't know that. But in fact, he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania and I suspect when you get to Memphis and you say to people 'Gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx gave into the unions,' Santorum won't be quite as popular the following morning."

In addition to the robo-calls, the campaign is paying to air a 30-minute program that shows the former House speaker discussing his energy proposals in both states. The 30-minute address, titled "$2.50 per Gallon Gasoline, Energy Independence and Jobs," is also now scheduled to air in Ohio, Washington state and Georgia.

Santos has always been in the way of Newt taking down Romney.

Rick will never be president. People will vote for Romney

between those 2. Great ad. I am tired of Santos getting

away with not being vetted. Imo.

I can hardly fault Gingrich for pulling the stops out to win his home state.

But if his performance in the south in the very near future doesn't match reasonable expectations I hope he has the grace to pull out and toss it to Santorum.

Gingrich thinks that by taking down Santorum, he can realistically enter the race. This, like permanent moon-based colonies and $2.50/gallon is a pipe dream. But most important the argument is disingenuous and is a desperate bid to shore up his falling poll numbers in GA. This is now a 2-man race between Santorum and Romney.

When the Right-to-Work organization send Santorum a questionnaire, Santorum pledged to oppose compulsory union dues, support repeal of mandatory union representation for federal workers, oppose “card check” union elections, oppose “project labor agreements” requiring union wages even for non-unionized federal work, and took the Right-to-Work position on all five other issues in the questionnaire as well. What more does Gingrich expect from one who is attracting Reagan (union) Democrats and has the best chance of netting in critical rust-belt states into the red-states column come November.

I suppose Newt had to hold his fire against Santorum, since except for South Carolina, Romney had him dwarfed in cash on hand, while Newt’s big push wouldn’t come until March and Super Tuesday, so he laid off Santorum. Santorum served the purpose to draw fire with his wins in delegate weak states, while Newt cooled his heels waiting for deep pockets to decide when he would cough up some money and how much.

Sorry, but that’s the way I feel. If you are going to back someone and you’re a billionaire, then back someone in style so he can compete.

As for Santorum kicking Newt when he was down, just so he could climb on in Florida and dance on the body was outrageous, and it made it very hard to watch while Newt kept his cool, held his fire, and even defended the little snot.....UNTIL.....the time was right.

That time is NOW.

You've got to be kidding! Every vote Santorum has ever made has been broadcasted non-stop in Romney's ads. The media has picked up where Romney falls short and has challenged every word out of Rick's mouth. He's been vetted far more than anyone else. I don't see Newt's votes or Paul's votes out there or Romney's backroom deals.

Just as Santorum is willing to go for broke, along with his supporters, Newt and his supporters will fight it out until the bell rings at the convention.

No Sale.

Gingrich is a very intelligent man, so perhaps he'll think differently.

I'd hope Santorum would do the same if he were the distant third.

The winner-take-all states don’t start in force until April. They can probably wait it out until the end of the month to see who’s doing better at that point. Then it would probably behoove one or the other to pull out, unless it looks clear one can win the WTA states without risking splitting the vote and handing them to Romney.

Yes, it has only happened recently when he won CO and MO. Still less than a month.

That’s a possibility, but right now that isn’t, however, what he is saying.

Watching Newt and Rick go after each other reminds me of why we get GOP candidates like McPain and Oromney. It couldn’t have worked out any better for Mittens had the establishment planned it this way.

Who cares about a questionaire? What did Santorum do when he was in office? He was a union goon!

As a union member that negotiates his own wages i have only seen Santorum come out against unions with one minor exception. Somebody named Newt is telling tall tales.
