Indiana Senate approves diluted state smoking ban

For all the bluster a statewide smoking ban sparked at the beginning of the 2012 legislative session, the version Indiana lawmakers may end up approving seems little more than a wisp of smoke.

The Senate approved a statewide ban Wednesday for the first time in its history, with 13 Democrats joining 16 Republicans for a 29-21 vote. But the proposal passed hardly resembles the one the House has approved six times in recent years.

I'd love to hear the backstory on this.

My feeling is that Daniels agreed to back a ban in exchange for votes on something major like public unions action but I don't know that for sure.

The story makes it seem like his support is very tepid.

I’m so sick of government in my face. We have lost so many freedoms over my lifetime that my son and grandson will never know true America.

....elections have consequences.....

....until a majority of the people who get off their ass and actually go vote learn this little truth, our freedoms will diminish with each session of legislatures all over the country.

Tyranny is the natural inclination of any government....most people who seek public office are arrogant enough to think that they know more than everyone else, and are out to prove it.

...this is why I would like to see some kind of public service system where the public servants are chosen like jurors, or some other "lottery" system....

...then if the chosen is literate, is a citizen, is not a criminal, has no violent objections and at least respects our Constitution, he/she is in...for a given term at full pay and a lifetime pension.

I realize that my plan is fraught with argument, disagreement and ....ridicule..

..but should not a discussion to formulate a plan to get more freedom loving people into our leadership be started?..

..or we will go the way of the Roman Empire, destroyed from within by arrogance, incompetence and greed.

...it is clear that if we leave it up to politicians, we are lost.

Depends. You would have to look at the deal.

I'm not sure I would hold off on a MAJOR public employee revamp of the Indiana economy if I could get it for a limp-wristed smoking deal like this looks to be.

That's cutting off your nose to spite your face IMO.

Politics means deals. If you always want only what you want you never get anything.

Okay, everybody that smokes tobacco just needs to gravitate to pot.

You can smoke that anywhere you want.

Senate Democratic Leader Vi Simpson, of Bloomington, said the proposed ban was a health issue.

"When I'm around somebody who smokes, I have to breathe that air. ... It's shared air. And we know the effects of secondhand smoke," she said.

No you don't, pinhead.
