BISMARCK, N.D. -- University of North Dakota teams risk forfeiting any post-season games if their athletes, cheerleaders or band wear or display the school's Fighting Sioux nickname and American Indian head logo, an NCAA official said Wednesday.
Bernard Franklin, an NCAA executive vice president, said in a letter to university provost Paul LeBel that the university "must forfeit competition" if "it has not adhered to this requirement" in any post-season games that UND teams have been invited to play in.
"We ask that the university take measures to minimize or eliminate the presence of the imagery or nickname brought to an NCAA championship venue," Franklin's letter says.
The NCAA has long said the nickname and logo are hostile to American Indians and that the Grand Forks school's teams may not wear uniforms that have the nickname or logo during post-season contests. But the Franklin letter's mention of forfeiting games is a new development.

I wonder if anyone has bothered to ask the Lakota, Santee, or Yanktonai how they feel about this?
Even Columbus never found one
Perhaps they can change it to the “fight and sue”
Well, we allow this to go on. We let those people go to work every day.
Well, we allow this to go on. We let those people go to work every day.
I guess Florida State is just too big to take on yet?
No the NCAA tried and got told to pound sand by the Seminole tribe. The tribe believes itis better to be honored and remembered than it is to be forgotten.
Who the Hell is the NCAA to say what is hostile to Indians?
Who is the NCAA? It is every member institution. They allow themselves to do this to one another, And, as dumb as this policy is, I can’t feel bad for North Dakota. They, as a member institution, have done nothing to protest or stop the NCAA’s meddling in the State of SC’s confederate flag debate and its policy of not holding NCAA planned championship events in the State (ie, supporting the NAALCP boycott).
Fighting Irish; Fighting Sioux. WTF is the difference? I’ll bet there are no Sioux out there who are incensed by the name. Just some wussie progressives trying to “protect” the Indians.
FU NCAA!
If someone had predicted 30 or 40 years ago that this PC insanity would become normative in American SPORTS, nobody would have believed it. Why, it’s as absurd as same-sex marriage . . . oh . . .
What if every kid on the team had the logo tattooed on his arm?
In 1969 the Standing Rock Tribe (The largest in the NDU region) granted the use to the Fighting Sioux name "in perpetuity" (that means "as long as the rivers flow and the winds blow") to the NDU.
Come 2005 the NCAA (representing the Paleface) declared use to the name demeaning and outlawing it unless the Sioux gave approval for continued use. The Spirit Lake Tribe gave approval by a vote of the whole tribe. However the Standing Rock Tribal council withheld approval, and also refused to hold a vote by the whole tribe.
LOL...well played !
In the full spirit of being PC, the team should rename itself “The Obsequious Self Loathing Weasels”.
"They" have a name. This is an example of the PC cowards that are betraying our culture.
Fire him. Now.
The White man is still keeping the Indian down.
