Ever since Newt Gingrich's loss in Florida's Republican primary I've been trying to read that gotcha-just-where-I-want-you smile of his. What's his plan for winning the nomination? No matter how bleak his prospects appear, he does have a plan, that we can be certain of. And whatever it is, it is patient, simple and clever.
He's the same man after all who wrote a book explaining how Robert E. Lee could have won the battle of Gettysburg by simply abandoning the field July 2, marching a day south and east and waiting for the Union Army to destroy itself. As Newt has done the same thing himself numerous times, most famously when he stopped negotiating with Bill Clinton when everybody told him he had to and if it wasn't for Bob Dole surrendering the government shut-down, almost folded up that administration like a cheap suit.
Now watching Romney and Santorum each beat the other's brains out in Michigan I think I finally figured out what Newt is up to. Waiting for it to finish so that he can move south and east again. Just like he always does. And if I'm right it means we'll look back and see that both Romney and Santorum showed up for a chess match, clutching a box of checkers.
From day one Gingrich could only win the nomination if he was the only conservative alternative to Romney. That a fact and that's his baggage. And so Michigan was the set-up Newt was waiting for. Let Romney be defeated in his home state he was finished and then Gingrich could take Santorum in the areas of the country where Monsignor Rick doesn't play all that well. Let Romney win and Santorum's momentum would peak and a week he'll be polling 10-15% again.

Santorum tied Romney in his state 15 delegates and possibly won with 17 delegates to Romney’s 13. I wouldn’t call that losing.
Now, Gingrich can capitalize on that outright admission that the Administration is totally callous as to what the Obama policy is doing to force working Americans into poverty.
It shows no empathy for American citizens who often, in their desire to work, drive 40+ miles each way, sometimes at jobs which do not pay high wages, and that they are being sacrificed on the altar of "environmentalism" and lust for power by its worshippers.
Effectively, Romney and Santorum fought to a draw in Michigan. I wonder how that will factor into Newt’s strategy. One thing, his two opponents spent a LOT of money in Michigan beating each other up, while Newt stayed out of the fray and flush with that new SuperPAC donation from Sheldon Adelson. He should be in good shape.
I guess I’m just a math geek but I look at the numbers and I don’t see Gingrich winning anything.
But I guess you have to forget about numbers and admire hindsight analysis of the civil war.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Go, Newt!
I am an Xbox junkie, I play with a lot of young guys all over the country, every day, we talk a lot and I am astounded by the number of Newt supporters in the 20 to 30 age group. I kind of do my own little polling, they despise Romney, they think Santorum is a fake, but they love Newts fight. Just saying.
Oh yeah, I hear this all the time.......”if it is between Romney and Obama, I’m voting for Obama.
We are talking someone who knows strategy.
Rick and Mitt were played by Newt.
They were the Iraq - Iran War with no winner and the both got creamed and they don't even know it.
They both proved they can't win over each other let alone Obama.
Ergo enter Stage Right Mr. Newt.
Brillant Freakin' Brilliant, couldn't happen to a couple of nicer guys. That is why quitely today, I have noticed articles, and wispers even from Ingraham that Newt isn't out of it yet. A little CYA after being for the Mitster IMHO..
Sure he did, a 50 - 50 split of the delegates between Santorum and Romney in a state he knew he had no chance .........The less delegates for Romney, the less the gap to make up in his targeted states.
Excellent! I heard Newt has a great team put together in Ohio, and that he’s making a major ad buy.
Why of course, he won Michigan just like he won Florida.
Ye ha!
I want to see a thread here for Virginians to tell us how it felt to vote for Ron Paul. Does it make you feel dirty inside, or maybe tingly, like hitting your funny bone? Sort of a “good pain?” Or is like living a strange, creepy nightmare that you can’t wake up from?
See Post 74 :)))
Very nice! You go girl!!!!
