PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- In a surprise announcement, moderate GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe said Tuesday she would abandon her campaign for a fourth term - a contest she was expected to win easily - because she is frustrated by a polarized atmosphere in Washington.
The move dealt an immediate blow to Republicans hoping to take control of the Senate in November and gave Democrats new hope of winning the longtime GOP-held seat.

It looks like the Republicans have until 3/15 at 5pm to have someone file to run for the election to the US Senate. I don’t know what the requirements are to have the filing accepted. That’s not much time. If more than one files then there’s a primary fight.
You have to wonder if she was bribed, blackmailed or is seriously ill (or someone in her close family is seriously ill). Of course she could want to see the Senate stay in the hands of the party which aligns closest to her heart and this is the best time in Maine to see that a Democrat is elected.
