Yea. When I was in high school kids had rifles in their pickups and cars. We even made explosives in chemistry class.

“Yea. When I was in high school kids had rifles in their pickups and cars.”

Believe it or not, I can top that.

A kid in our neighborhood went to a ‘military academy’ located just north of downtown. He of course rode the public bus to and from school in uniform everyday. One day of the month they took their drill rifles home with them - on the bus, walking down the street with it slung over their shoulder properly. And then back the next day.

Of course these were old ‘03 Springfield's with the breech drilled, but you couldn't tell that from a distance. No one took the slightest bit of notice. If anybody did say anything it was something like, “oh yea, they're tough on those kids, they make them keep their rifle with them 24 hours a day for one day of the month.” He walked down our street with the rifle at least 20 or 30 times. Man we lived in a different world then.

We had a rifle team when I was in High School in the late sixties. We fired .22 bolt action military training rifles at the Tucson Rod and Gun Club every Friday afternoon. Several of us would go Quail hunting after class and had our shotguns in our cars at school. No one gave it a second thought.
