During a recent Fox News Channel debate about the Obama administration's tax policies, Democrat Bob Beckel raised the issue of "fairness."
He pointed out that a child born to a poor woman in the Bronx enters the world with far worse prospects than a child born to an affluent couple in Connecticut.
No one can deny that. The relevant question, however, is: How does allowing politicians to take more money in taxes from successful people, to squander in ways that will improve their own re-election prospects, make anything more "fair" for others?
Even if additional tax revenue all went to poor single mothers which it will not the multiple problems of children raised by poor single mothers would not be cured by throwing money at them.
Indeed, the skyrocketing of unwed motherhood began when government welfare programs began throwing money at teenage girls who got pregnant.
Children born and raised without fathers are a major problem to society and to themselves. There is nothing "fair" about increasing the number of such children.
A more fundamental problem with the "fairness" issue raised by Beckel and many others is the slippery vagueness of the word "fair."
To ask whether life is fair either here and now, or at any time or place around the world, over the past several thousand years is to ask a question whose answer is obvious.
Life has seldom been within shouting distance of fair, in the sense of even approximately equal prospects of success.

Bob Beckel is a Putz!!!! Tha’s the kindest thing I can say about him.
You can confiscate all the wealth over 200k of everyone without a close connection with Obama, give it to the poor and, after the drug dealers get their cut, the poor would in most cases stll be poor.
He is definitely when he is on Hannity. He is tolerable on The Five. Yesterday for example, in honor of President’s Day he asked each of the other four who their favorite president was. Each one named one, then when his turn was he named the peanut farmer from Georgia and President Bush and the reason he gave was what George W had done for Africa. He said no other president has done so much for Africa as President Bush has. Dana Perino also said he was her favorite
As are many talking heads....imo.
Common sense answered this question years ago. I am sure that Dr, Sowell will simply verbalize more of the obvious.
This form of "fairness" is a red herring, pure and simple.
What's fair about half the population paying zero income taxes, without any skin in the game?
What fair about neglecting to demand a rational definition of "fairness" from Obama and his acolytes?
I simply ignore all mention of "fairness" from the radicals.
Just a couple of days ago, the Putz, as if saying something profound, responded to the fact that trillions$ have been spent on the poor, education, etc with no measureable positive results, by saying, "all that may be true, but we meant well, we had the best intentions..." as if that cancelled the outrageous waste of wealth and damage to society. Results don't matter, only good intentions.
The road to Hades is paved with good intentions, or didn’t he learn that.
First of all, the argument is bogus. This is a scheme to raise the taxes on middle class people. If they really wanted them to “pay their fair share,” they would increase the capital gains tax.
“Fairness” is a code word for socialism.
BTW, my favorite President was Wm. Henry Harrison. He had the least opportunity to damage the country.
You are on the wrong forum.
How so? I pointed out that the Rats keep talking about taxing the rich when it is clear that an income tax increase would merely hurt the middle class. The rich don’t pay alot of income tax; capital gains at 15% is their choice. Now how is that wrong? Did you misunderstand my post? I was pointing out the hypocracy of the left trying to bamboozle the public.
Advocating more tax for the "rich" is not the right answer. Less spending is the correct answer every time. Advocating raising the capital gains tax when it has already been taxed at the corporate level is plain wrong. Capital gains are paid from company profits, company profits are already taxed once when they are made.
I've never seen anyone at F.R. advocate raising taxes on the "rich" in any form, that's why I said "wrong forum".
Much of my retirement income is capital gains, I'm far from "rich" and I'm not alone in having capital gains as a portion of my income among other retirees here at F.R.
Investment should be encouraged for our economy to thrive, when investment tax (capital gains) is taxed more heavily, there is less of it, business suffers and unemployment rises.
Generally it isn't healthy to advocate higher taxes on anyone. The exception, in my book, is that everyone should pay some, (also known as, having skin in the game) because very close to half of our citizens pay no federal income tax. I repeat myself but less government spending of taxpayers money and lower taxes are the only answers.
I'm not an economist but we have some here on this forum who could explain it better than I can and I'd be willing to bet that not a single one would want to raise the capital gains tax.
That you "belong on another forum" was harsh and I offer my apology but you are still wrong in wanting one class of people to have their taxes raised, that's Obama's war not conservative's.
"Well, I am here to advocate for unfairness. I've got a 10-year-old at home. She's always saying, "That's not fair." When she says this, I say, "Honey, you're cute. That's not fair. Your family is pretty well off. That's not fair. You were born in America. That's not fair. Darling, you had better pray to God that things don't start getting fair for you." What we need is more income, even if it means a bigger income disparity gap." -- P.J. O'Rourke
I am NOT advocating tax on the rich.
I’m saying that the Rats are insincere with their raising income tax on the rich ie. “paying their fair share,” because IF they were serious, they would raise capital gains instead.
I am in no way condoning taxation of anyone.
My apologies, I did misunderstand you.
