From Gleick's Huffington Post confession:
Given the potential impact however, I attempted to confirm the accuracy of the information in this document. In an effort to do so, and in a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else's name. The materials the Heartland Institute sent to me confirmed many of the facts in the original document, including especially their 2012 fundraising strategy and budget. I forwarded, anonymously, the documents I had received to a set of journalists and experts working on climate issues.

For the record Dr. Gleick, I am not anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated as you suggest. And you have damaged me and my business. I suspect Ill be seeing you in court to protect my rights, along with many others, sir.
Another “scientist” engaged in another dishonest act. Hmmm. If only we would let scientists marry, these tragedies could be avoided. I bet you he is a “Darwinist”!
So, will this attempt at damage control succeed?
I have my doubts. There will almost certainly be more shoes to drop. Gleick is clearly trying to dodge the accusation that he authored the fake memo by copping only to the theft-by-deception of the Heartland documents and disavowing authorship of the fake, however there seem to be too many smoking guns in the fake for Gleick to escape responsibility for that.
Gotta order some more popcorn for this one...
"This twit sure does get around. He personifies whats wrong with CAGW warmunists: inadequate research, fabricated data, erroneous conclusions, corruption, deceit, collusion and arrogance; all perpetuated on the false pretense of saving humanity from itself."
"But given the similarity of the language and writing style in the faked memo to much of that on record by Gleick and given the times in the metadata of the faked memo, when added to the knowledge we have that the man is not above lying ( in order to obtain the other material ) I think any rational man could quite easily draw the conclusions that, as was originally believed, Gleick could easily have prepared the memo in order to make the other documents, which are innocuous in and of themselves, seem something more."
Gleick: I only note that the scientific understanding of the reality and risks of climate change is strong, compelling, and increasingly disturbing, and a rational public debate is desperately needed.
Oh bull hooey. You know full well, Mr. Gleick, that YOUR side does not want debate on this subject at all. If there is ever to be a serious debate on the facts of global climate then all you have done is present in big bold colors a definitive argument why you cant be a part of that discussion.
"Gleick is not rational. This is his oh Sh** moment and hail mary pass. He is trying to get everyone off the most damning document. The document that pointed directly to him in everyones eyes. I no longer think he is coniving or trying to muster the troops. This is self preservation. More like a
well since the real documents wont really get me in much trouble WTH do I do about that fake one?"
This is an important story which totally destroys the credibility of a leading climate-change eco-fascist and therefore deserves a place in Breaking News.
Very interesting.
(Received via email direct from Heartland president Bast in advance of their website posting, see Gleicks statement/confession here Anthony)
FEBRUARY 20, 2012: Earlier this evening, Peter Gleick, a prominent figure in the global warming movement, confessed to stealing electronic documents from The Heartland Institute in an attempt to discredit and embarrass a group that disagrees with his views.
Gleicks crime was a serious one. The documents he admits stealing contained personal information about Heartland staff members, donors, and allies, the release of which has violated their privacy and endangered their personal safety.
An additional document Gleick represented as coming from The Heartland Institute, a forged memo purporting to set out our strategies on global warming, has been extensively cited by newspapers and in news releases and articles posted on Web sites and blogs around the world. It has caused major and permanent damage to the reputations of The Heartland Institute and many of the scientists, policy experts, and organizations we work with.
A mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.

Hang the SOB....my personal feeling.
Definitely popcorn time.
The thief was recently named to a scientific ethics committee.

FEBRUARY 20, 2012 -- The Heartland Institute has issued the following statement concerning Peter Gleick's confession with respect to stolen and forged documents.
The following statement by Heartland Institute President Joseph L. Bast may be used for attribution. For more information, contact Director of Communications Jim Lakely at jlakely@heartland.org or 312-377-4000.
"Earlier this evening, Peter Gleick, a prominent figure in the global warming movement, confessed to stealing electronic documents from The Heartland Institute in an attempt to discredit and embarrass a group that disagrees with his views.
"Gleick's crime was a serious one. The documents he admits stealing contained personal information about Heartland staff members, donors, and allies, the release of which has violated their privacy and endangered their personal safety.
"An additional document Gleick represented as coming from The Heartland Institute, a forged memo purporting to set out our strategies on global warming, has been extensively cited by newspapers and in news releases and articles posted on Web sites and blogs around the world. It has caused major and permanent damage to the reputations of The Heartland Institute and many of the scientists, policy experts, and organizations we work with.
"A mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.
"In his statement, Gleick claims he committed this crime because he believed The Heartland Institute was preventing a "rational debate" from taking place over global warming. This is unbelievable. Heartland has repeatedly asked for real debate on this important topic. Gleick himself was specifically invited to attend a Heartland event to debate global warming just days before he stole the documents. He turned down the invitation.
"Gleick also claims he did not write the forged memo, but only stole the documents to confirm the content of the memo he received from an anonymous source. This too is unbelievable. Many independent commentators already have concluded the memo was most likely written by Gleick.
"We hope Gleick will make a more complete confession in the next few days.
"We are consulting with legal counsel to determine our next steps and plan to release a more complete statement about the situation tomorrow. In the meantime, we ask again that publishers, bloggers, and Web site hosts take the stolen and fraudulent documents off their sites, remove defamatory commentary based on them, and issue retractions."
The Heartland Institute is a 28-year-old national nonprofit organization with offices in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. Its mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. For more information, visit our Web site or call 312/377-4000.
"Heartland has been subverting well-understood science for years," wrote Scott Mandia, co-founder of the climate science rapid response team. "They also subvert the education of our school children by trying to ;'teach the controversy' where none exists."
He went on: "Peter Gleick, a scientist who is also a journalist just used the same tricks that any investigative reporter uses to uncover the truth. He is the hero and Heartland remains the villain. He will have many people lining up to support him."
