Questions Surface On Gingrich Campaign Travel Payments By Luke Rosiak February 17, 2012

When Newt Gingrich’s campaign disclosed in October it planned to pay the candidate $70,000 for travel expenses in the third quarter, the transfer was an anomaly among presidential campaigns.

But weeks ago, the former House speaker revised his third-quarter bill: He actually expected to personally receive $115,000 of the funds donated to his campaign to reimburse himself for expenses during that period.

The campaign would not explain how the candidate forgot about $45,000 in receipts, what they were for or why the campaign wasn’t simply paying the invoices directly, as other campaigns do. Far beyond that payment, the uses of donations to Mr. Gingrich’s campaign are being obscured on a massive scale by the unprecedented use of a legally questionable tactic, The Washington Times found one that has accompanied the flow of the better part of a million dollars in unexplained cash to Mr. Gingrich, family members and top staffers.

The money reportedly was to reimburse employees for unspecified expenses in what amounted to petty cash exceeding their entire salaries, The Times’s analysis of federal records showed. The move would be permitted only if, election lawyers say, that money was spread across so many vendors that not a single company received more than $200 in total.

“That’s an enormous amount of money, and not $200 wound up in the same place? I find that extraordinarily hard to believe,” said Brett Kappel, an election-law lawyer for Arent Fox LLC, a law firm and lobbying group based in Washington, D.C. “I’ve never seen a major presidential campaign run this way but I’ve only been doing this for 21 years.

“If this recurs throughout the campaign, this is the kind of issue where you get audited,” he said.

Would this be a body blow to the Gingrich campaign?

This is so much bogus nonsense. I recently wrote this when a Santo guy who went trolling. Seems appropriate to re-post it here:

“I saw that yesterday and it’s looks cheesy bogus. I’m still awaiting for the ball-less FEC to look into all those $$ millions of foreign funds that illegally filled Obama’s coffer back in 2008. Yeah that right, not a dang thing happened to the ‘above the law’ Obama.

And, BTW, a presidential campaign can legally pay the candidate up to $400,000. It’s the very reason Al Sharpton ran every 4 years and loony tunes RuPaul still runs for elections. It is to pad their incomes. “

No, it would an attempt by the RNC and the mormom Bishop, and his supporters who pay for SWEATER VEST, to take out Gingrich and buy the nomination.

Is there a "controlling legal authority" for that stuff now?

Things were so much easier back in Algore's day. /s

Is this self-appointed watch group auditing anyone else? No? And in the midst of the campaign? I guess the Romney bots want to try and stick a stake in his heart, eh?

A great many of the contributors to Romney’s political action committee were corporate lobbyists or lobbying firms.

One of those firms was Arent Fox LLC. Arent Fox gave Mitt Romney back in May of 2010, right in the middle of the big health care reform hullaballoo.

Arent Fox just so happens to have lobbied the federal government on behalf of Watson Pharmaceuticals at that time. Another lobbying client of Arent Fox last year was Admetech, another pharmaceuticals company.

As I recall, the Gingrich campaign didn’t have any funds before October of last year. Most likely all expenses till that time were paid by Gingrich, his family and staff. When the campaign did start to receive more substantial donations, they probably sought to collect for all the preceding outlays.

As I also recall, back in the ‘08 campaign, Rudy was riding high as the frontrunner thru almost all of ‘07, then out of nowhere McCain emerged. Before that, he was shown carrying his own bags through airports. His staff were working without pay or reimbursement through that period. I’d bet once he caught on and that campaign received funding, they were able to be reimburse for the preceding period.

The Washington Times it seems did the investigation. No question that others in the media are now searching for more details. I guess we’ll hear and know more in the days ahead.

Sounds exactly like how it's done.

One good thing about Newt is he's VERY honest. Period.

That's just another reason why I want him in Rick's cabinet.

You may be right here. The WT says its found close to $1m in “unexplained” cash reimbursement payments. I am sure the MSM will pick on this in the next couple of days and we’ll have a dust storm over it. Either way, these kinds of news stories will have a negative pull on the candidate. And when the dust settles, there goes Adelson’s $20m in smoke.
