Gingrich rallies Georgia faithful
AJC ^ | 2-17-12 | Scott

Newt Gingrich returned Friday to the one place polls say he's still the front-runner and vowed to fight to win his former state...

"The primary in Georgia is very important, and I need your help and no one should take it for granted," Gingrich said from the stage in a hangar at Falcon Field. "This is a wide-open race."

He urged his supporters to spread the word...With your help we’re going to win the primary, we’ll win Super Tuesday and, for the first time, we’ll be moving back to front-runner status with your help."....

A super PAC supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Friday purchased nearly $1 million worth of television advertising time in Georgia for spots to run the final two weeks of the campaign, beginning Tuesday.

Tyler told the AJC that Gingrich's PAC has made no buy in Georgia and is not ready to announce any buys, but he denounced the Romney super PAC he refers to as "Destroy Our Future."

“Everywhere they’ve run ads they’ve repressed the vote," Tyler said. "Their scorch-the-earth strategy is destroying our party, destroying our candidates and destroying Romney.

Gingrich, too, took aim at his rivals' decision (not to debate). Noting that two people in the audience were wearing chicken suits and shirts for Santorum and Romney, Gingrich said it was an appropriate metaphor.

"If you’re afraid to debate Newt Gingrich," he said, "you sure can’t debate Barack Obama."

Gingrich added, "There's something wrong when someone tries to buy their way to the presidency with negative ads and won't stand out in the open to defend them."

Cheryl Epsy-Dalton, the GOP's 13 District vice chairwoman, said: "Against a bulldog, you have to have a bulldog...And our bulldog is tougher than their bulldog."

He also said you cannot put a gun rack in a volt and stated that when Obama took office the avg gas price was $1.89.

Vin,

I find it so strange that Gingrich is making such a big deal about Georgia. He should win Georgia as he lived and represented a house seat for 20 years. He should not even have to campaign in GA. There are other places he should be concentrating on if he wants to have any possibility of winning. I still think he is making so many mistakes by skipping states. I am still a Santorum supporter but if Newt somehow pulls this off than fine he gets my vote in the general for sure. But the way he is running his campaign is very odd. Guiliani did the same thing and so did Ronald Reagan in 1976 and it didn’t work. Reagan concentrated on southern states and he lost. Newt should have been in the mid-west, Michigan and Arizona. Michigan is too late but Arizona to ensure a double loss for Mitt would not be a bad thing.

Don't look now Naps but the main stream media is starting to pour it on Santorum.

Here's a sampling.

Hey Napster,

Not avoiding your observations, my friend, but had a strenuous day and need to turn in— I’ll touch base tomorrow=
Looks like my buddy Red intends to keep you busy for now, anyway. -:)

Best

Vin

Hey Napster,

He’s spending time in ga, because right now, it’s his best chance of winning a state— and if he loses that one, he’ll have a hard time claiming any right to remain in the race.

After Fla, I think he honestly believed it was a 2 man race- and he never anticipated that Rick would have the surge.

But given the current state of the race, I believe his strategy is simply to wedge Romney. If Newt actively campaigns in a state and splits the conservative vote, he helps Romney. I don’t think he has any intention of doing that.

Newt’s leaving the ball in Romney’s court. Clearly, Romney must now bring down Santorum- or Romney loses- Rick wins. That would be fine by Newt. I think Newt has 2 goals- (1) to make certain Romney doesn’t win; (2) to win the nomination. I think the 1st goal takes precedence over the 2nd.

Bottom line, I think his sole option is to pick up whatever delegates he can, compete where he has a reasonable chance of winning - and thus remain viable-— and wait-— and hope that the primary campaign takes another twist.
