LOS ANGELES When Newt Gingrich announced he would be spending the majority of the week in California it was assumed the candidate, who is low on funds, was heading west to collect money.
While Gingrichs California political director said fundraising this week likely pushed the campaign to its $2 million goal in the state since the beginning of the campaign, there is another strategy is in the works to rack up votes as the state awards proportional delegates for the first time.

Gingrich has long said hes in the race until the convention, even saying Thursday his goal was to go to Tampa.
California awards 172 delegates, and was a winner-take-all state in previous Republican presidential primary elections. This election cycle the state will award proportional delegates for the first time, and delegates are bound based on a win in one of the 53 congressional districts. Each district awards three delegates, and an additional 10 at-large delegates are bound to the state-wide winner.
If you win a couple of congressional districts, you get can get as many as you would have gotten in New Hampshire just out of two congressional delegates, Schroeder said. So everythings going to change in terms of how Californias campaigned to. Well be campaigned to like were several different states.

Most of them are either Asian, African American or Hispanic. And so youre going to see for the first time presidential candidates aggressively campaigning to Asians, blacks and Hispanics in California, because they can win significant numbers of delegates, Schroeder said.

Gingrich said today his trip to California was a success

I hope to leave with affection, votes, fond memories and money, all of those things coming together, Gingrich said.
Gingrich heads back to California on Feb. 25

California or BUST!
GO NEWT!
I do not know much about California.
From the Cook Report, there appears to be 34 CD’s of what I would call the Soviet Un-, er, liberal districts, most likely to vote for Romney, Fiorina, Whittman, etc.
There’s about 19 CD’s that seem normal and contain the most Republican parts of the state. In theory, Santorum or Gingrich is probably playing for these 57 delegates. Anything like that, especially as late as June 5th will be very important. Because June 5th, along with NJ, is going to be considered a mini-Super Tuesday with 2 contests Romney would be projected to win, with SD merged in there. If I’m Texas, I would really consider sticking the TX primary on June 5 if they’re going to wait it out, because that would make that date even bigger than Super Tuesday.
After June 5, UT goes two weeks later and we know that’s no contest there.
Rock on Newt. All the way to Tampa.
I didn’t even hear about this until after it was over. Doesn’t Newt send email invites for these things?
Hell, I could have seen him and ponied up some more.
$250 was all it he was asking for? Putz, send me an invite.
Oh no! I’m so sorry!
Aren’t you on his email list? I am and I had notice.
I should be and I’m a big supporter. I’m going to tap out on my contributions and then look for any other way to send my man to 1600 Penn.
Go to Newt.org to get on the email list and sign up for notifications. At the bottom of the page is a contact tab. Leave a message or sign up to help in any way you can.
I feel sad about this. I know I pinged the list to his CA schedule, because I pinged Ron Dog first. He’s in the Los Angeles area and usually motivates or tries to gather the Los Angles/ Southern CA FReepers for various events. I don’t think he replied.
Got this info this morning. Please put this out on the Newt Ping list for those that want to volunteer and get more info.

It’s what we do. Grassroots is us!
GO NEWT!!!!
GO NEWT GO—its about the survival of our country!!
Now that would make for a great bumpersticker!!! Love it!!
Hmmm...... 34 neglected districts with 102 delegates...interesting.
I’m not sure why districts with virtually no Republicans get the same number of delegates as those districts with hundreds of thousands of Republicans. It’s the same in my state, and I don’t understand the rationale behind it...they should give one per district and then divvy the rest based on GOP registration or GOP turnout at the previous election. Anyway, for a clever guy like Newt it does present some opportunities, as it also does in some other states.
Put me on your list. I’m in NorCal but could drive to LA and other parts.
I’ve seen some states that do give a range of delegates depending on how Republican the district is.
