WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most Americans don't share Rick Santorum's absolutist take on abortion. He's out of step on women in combat. He questions the values of the two-thirds of mothers who work. He's even troubled by something as commonplace as birth control - for married couples.
Even among a Republican presidential field eager to please religious conservatives, Santorum's ideas stand out.
A Catholic father of seven whose kids are home-schooled, Santorum may seem to wear his conservatism as comfortably as his sweater vests. But he's walked a careful path, keeping the more provocative opinions that helped sink his re-election to the Senate in 2006 mostly out of his presidential campaign.
That is until he leaped to the top of the polls, alongside Mitt Romney.
Now Santorum's record on social issues is getting a closer look. On several matters, he's outside the Republican mainstream. And if he becomes the GOP nominee, some of his ideas would probably be surprising, even puzzling, to general election voters.

Considering the majority of the 53% who voted for Zero in the first place were women, it is a jaundiced view that is entirely justified.
That means, inevitably, he will end up defending himself to a hostile press when he should be attacking the obscene record of the Obama regime. But Rick would rather bloviate about himself and how righteous his positions are, than attack the enemy. Game set and match to Obama in November.
“But I don’t see him picking up more than 25% of the women’s vote in a general election. “
Women aren’t left wing drones. Check out the women’s vote in the South Carolina primary.
Mitt is the best looking of the three. That is why.
Wow, South Carolina is just like the whole rest of the country.
Sorry, incorrect. The IUD prevents IMPLANTATION of a fertilized egg. It does nothing to prevent fertilization.
Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube. An IUD is placed in the uterus to prevent implantation. Think of them as mini coat-hangers.
Baptized, Confirmed...you left out practicing. Just an oversight?
But you are probably correct about not being able to convince them. A guilty conscious is a formidable opponent. Using artificial contraception in contradiction to their faith would surely set up a conflict and I can see them taking out their frustration on a candidate who by his personal positions would magnify that conflict.
Out of curiosity, what are their views on the contraception mandate by Obama?
I’m a Newt gal.
That being said, should God choose to intervene in this election and save our country, Rick Santorum is the most in your face candidate to Obama. His stance on life repudiates everything Obama has ever actually bothered to take a stance on.
I do think it would Divine Intervention for Santorum to win. But who knows?
You want to “get” people to see things as you do? I don't because I‘m satisfied with my vision. In addition, because of your and a group of posters’ relentless attacks against Santorum, I can't bear to even look at Newt. I can't bear to hear his voice. This is not anything against Newt, himself. I just get flashes of all those vicious posts, yours being among the most notable, and my automatic reaction is that I just can't deal with Newt. So, it would seem that your efforts have been counter productive, at least in my regard.
These two wenches can go pound sand. It’s an unjust characterization of Rick’s views on Life. He should be applauded for the impressions of chivalry and the defense of Life.
Regardless of the merit, I’m doubtful about Rick’s ability to actually affect change. His paternalistic disposition is a liability. He’s not Reagan, he’s not Dubya, he’s not Sarah. His fretful look of disbelief is gonna be a hard sell.
We need the entire constituency to take 2012, not just those gratified by Santorum’s talking points. Rush is wrong on this one.
I suspect we need to sink further before we get serious. Damn!
“Wow, South Carolina is just like the whole rest of the country.”
Wow, whatever are you talking about?
Birth control pills and the IUD work on two levels. The first is to prevent conception. However if conception does occur, there is a fail-safe that raises the effectiveness of the pill or device. The lining of the womb is thinned and made hostile to the fertilized egg. The fertilized egg does not implant in the womb as it normally would, but rather continues to fall..........to death. Read the information provided in the pill prescription. Or do a yahoo or google search using the term abortifacient. You’ll find tons of information.
All opposed.
Actually, it was Republicans like John Warner who derailed Judge Bork. Weren’t there six or eight turncoats?
Yes, it will take divine intervention to get Saint Rick nominated. Getting him elected may be impossible, but maybe as the nominee he will develop an effective fall campaign.
Sweet. Sure is an enigma. As a woman I am having trouble understanding their position. Oh well...
BTW, I appreciate you're not taking my post to you as an attack on your loved ones - or if you did I appreciate that you held your fire in response. I sincerely did not mean it as a judgment or indictment, but after reading through it I realized how it could be construed that way. You sir, are a gentleman.
bttt
The "misinformation" is entirely yours, actually.
An IUD never prevents fertilization. It works by creating an inflammatory response inside the uterus that prevents implantation of the developing baby AFTER fertilization, which is to say that it causes an early abortion every time conception occurs.
The pill (and other hormonal contraceptives) essentially simulates pregnancy. Part of the time it prevents ovulation, and therefore prevents fertilization. But the rest of the time, ovulation (called "breakthrough ovulation"; Google it) occurs and implantation fails because the lining of the uterus is in "pregnancy mode," not "implantation mode" ... again, that's an early abortion.
(Read the package insert for any hormonal contraceptive if you don't believe me. They all mention this.)
