Maya Angelou: 'Barack Obama has done a remarkable job'
The Guardian ^ | 02/15/12 | Hugh Muir

Posted on 02/16/2012 1:07:44 PM PST by crosshairs

There has always been something bittersweet about the life experience of Maya Angelou. Think of the literature fashioned from a harsh and tragic upbringing in racially segregated Missouri and Arkansas: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey Now. Think of her triumphs articulating the struggle of African Americans through the civil rights era. Consider that each year, her birthday, 4 April, brings with it both joy and painful memories.

Who would share that anniversary with the assassination of her friend, Martin Luther King? This year, if it progresses as Angelou expects, will exacerbate the pattern, bringing a momentous high, but not before some sickening lows. Don't worry about Barack Obama, says the chronicler of black history. He'll be re-elected. He deserves to be re-elected. But between now and November, it's going to get nasty. "I think we are going to see a number of people who say: 'I have no racial prejudice in my heart, not in my conversation,'" Angelou says. "But in the next few months, as we wind up to the double campaign, I tell you we are going to see some nastiness, some vulgarity, I think. They'll pull the sheets off."

Obama has critics and doubters. Angelou, the sage of black America, now 83, has no time for them. "I think he has done a remarkable job, knowing how much he has been opposed," she says. "Every suggestion he makes, the Republicans en masse fight against him or don't vote at all." It's about him being a Democrat and being the first black president, she says. Angelou worked with King in the 1960s as northern co-ordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the pair debated the possibility of a black president.

When hubby and I have fortune cookies come with the bill after eating Chinese food, we crack them open and read them. We always add the words ‘in bed’ to the end of the fortune. It is pretty funny and we always crack up.

When Maya and other fellow blax stand on their soapbox and denounce ‘sheeted whitey’ in defending BO, they need to add ‘because he is black’ to the end of any statement defending him.

Just as funny as the fortune cookies. And just as real.

Words of wisdom from the affirmative action poet.

You got that right. I've actually tried to read some of her stuff. Awful.

My version.

I know why the caged bird sings
it sings of lies and other things
It sings of tribal leaders who sold their own
heart of their heart, bone of their bone

It sings of plantations owned by the left
of broken promises sung by the deaf
for those who have listened to the song
the caged bird has sung for so very long

It sang out its hope for freedom denied
but chains still bind by masters undefied
the song will go on til their eyes see clearly
the lies of the left that have cost them so dearly

Look at that Maya, I wrote it in 10 minutes. Maya needs to get off the plantation!

One massively overrated hack who got where she was because she was a minority and liberal praises another massively overrated hack who got where he was because he was a minority and liberal...What's new?

You said it!

Her prose is about as good as Zer0's presidency.

They suk.

Tell me about it. I had a untra lib college professor back around 1995 that was in love with Angelou because she was a left wing friend of Bill Clinton. We were forced to read and interpret her works. I've read better in hallmark cards and most of her works was thinly disguised "I'z a po oppressed black women and da white man got me down" racist drek.

Ping

. . . . Did Maya Angelou take three-year-old Barry to Hawaii to live with the Davis family, (or Dunhams)?

Just wondering.

Maybe she just agrees with him. Or maybe, like so many people, she feels comfortable with someone she thinks she has something in common with.

Given who she is there's nothing unexpected in this. And nothing unexpected in the responses.

But what's with the dirt-fetish?

—— her and the horse she rode in on.

It never ends these tales of growing up in the south and the Massa treating them so bad.

200 years from now they will be putting out the same garbage.

Life is tough for Maya Angelou. The Public Schools have made every kid in the country buy and read her lousy books, instead of the great classics. And so they grow up thinking that that crud is literature. And Maya takes their money to the bank.

Hey, Maya. Did you ever notice that MLK was a Republican, that the party of slavery and Jim Crow was the Democrats, and that since LBJ and the Democrats twisted the civil rights movement to their political ends, most blacks are born into broken families, live in decaying slums, and turn to crime and resentment because that’s what they are being taught to do?

[Dr. Evil speaking]
This is a very sensitive subject..
[Background]
Just.. the.. two of us (Just the two of us)

Dr. Evil: Yeaah!
From the moment I heard Freau, say I had a clone
I knew that I’d be safe cuzz I’d never be alone
An evil doctor shouldn’t speak a lot about his feelings
My hurt and my pain don’t make me too unfeeling
I hoped Scott, would look up to me
Run the business, of the family
Head an evil empire, just like his dear old dad
Give him my love and the things I never had
Scott would think, I was a good guy
Return the love I have, make me want to cry
Be evil, but have fun feelings too
Change my life like Oprah, and Maya Angelou
But Scott rejected me
Cest la vie
Life is cruel
Treat you unfairly
But still, a God there must be
Mini-Me
You complete me
