When George Romney was running for president (during the Vietnam War Years) he made some sort of comment about “not being brain washed by Washington.” Normally, especially now this would not be a strange, nor bad comment, but during the Vietnam War the LSM, as is their wont, took this and made a huge stack of hay out of it. All that stuff about POWs and MIAs. Cost George the election/nomination, not sure which.
