You would be forgiven for thinking these stunning vistas lay deep in the heart of Antarctica.
But they are, in fact, what has become of the European landscape as temperatures plummet to nearly -40C - the coldest snap in decades.
Rivers, lakes, beaches and even seas have been iced over by a Siberian freeze, creating some incredible sights, but also more tales of tragedy.

But in southern Kosovo, nine people were killed when an avalanche hit the village of Restelica, officials said on Sunday, adding to more than 500 killed in snow and bitter cold across the Continent in the past two weeks.
In Poland, the interior ministry said 20 people had died in the past 24 hours because of the freezing weather, bringing the toll there so far this year to at least 100.

I'll never forget Feb '78 at Todendorf, a German anti-aircraft range on the Baltic. IIRC, it was about 20 degrees, with 30 MPH winds coming off the sea. Hated every minute of it.
The Army made up for it, though. I spent the summer of '79 as the XO of the Admin/Log group. We were the only Americans for 200 miles. There was a tourist town nearby, named Lutjenburg. I developed a friendship with the owner of the Hotel Ostseeblick, helping him close down the bar most days at 4 AM.
He liked the way I would loosely translate American colloquialisms into German. My nickname for him was damentotschlager..."Lady Killer".
I made so many friends that summer, I spent long weekends up there, even though it was 400 miles from where I lived. With the autobahn, it was only a 5 hour drive.
You know, the one with the knee brace. With my hamstrings, the others would outrun me.
They pretty much did, back in the 70's. I don't think they specified CO2, but predicted a new ice age due to human use of fossil fuels. Contrails from jet travel alone were supposed to reflect sunlight back into space at some alarming rate, IIRC.
Hey, nothin' wrong with strong, fit young women; sure beats those way-too-skinny models!
I think I saw a cross country skier skiing in Rome....Nice Global Warming we are having...
B-B-bu-but Owl got hisselp a Nobel piece of the pie prize. Oh them folks have fun with their fickled finger of fate award! Owltragous!
Is it just me, or are the two with the most modest shorts/skorts on also the prettiest?
Actually they did flip the weather coin——back in the 1970’s they were indeed claiming global cooling was going to freeze the oceans. Maybe they need a two sided coin-—one with an a$$hole on each side?
Small World. I was assigned to I Trp 3/2 ACR in Amberg during that same time frame!
I thought that sounded familiar so I did a Google search. My wife is from the area around Kiel and she lived in Flensburg. We vacationed in that area after we were married. Oh yeah- Hotel Ostseeblick was the second hit on the search!
Yeah, those T-62’s REALLY sucked at Graf.
CO2 is no problem whatsoever, we would be better off with a little more in the atmosphere. The whole idea of calling CO2 a pollutant is insanity raised to a level formerly unknown.
If you really think those are some of the largest thighs and rear ends ever photographed you are as confused as Joe Biden.
“Apparently, you haven’t experienced a Texas-style summer.”

Any place that gets hotter than right here in SC where I sit is unfit for human habitation! Right now everything is bone dry and it ain’t supposed to be that way in Feb. Areas that are supposed to be swamp are dried out bone dry tinder. I dread to think what spring and summer will be like if we don’t start getting some rain soon. There are dugout reservoirs here that should have water within three feet of the ground level and fourteen feet deep but are nearly dry.
Not the largest, but very ample. Certainly much larger than I personally am accustom to dealing with or seeing. Not very nice looking to me anyway.
All depends on what one is accustom to... or likes.
Personally I prefer swimmers bodies....
