Reporting from San Diego— For the record: Yes, that was Newt Gingrich at the San Diego Zoo on Tuesday for a 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour.

Gingrich was in the area raising money for his bid for the Republican presidential nomination but found time to visit the zoo, including feeding a young panda, looking at elephants, polar bears and tigers, and posing for pictures with zoo staffers.

Gingrich has made other visits to the zoo and Safari Park, including a sleepover at the park's Snore and Roar program.

-snip-

The Gingrich visit was planned at the last moment with no public announcement, lest he draw a crowd. Of course, the large Gingrich for President bus with his picture on the side, parked outside the zoo's entrance, may have been a tipoff

The San Diego zoo is one of the best I have ever seen...They also have a wildlife park. Worth the trip for anyone going to San Diego. In Old Town San Diego there is a mexican restaurant with walking mariachi band and the largest jumbo frozen Margarita in the world...needs to be lifted with both hands.....I managed 2 and don’t remember anything else until I found myself crawling out of my friends doggie door just to see if I could...Would suggest only one......great food also

I too will say the San Diego zoo is the best zoo I’ve visited, and we spent days there last summer (it helped that they had Steam Powered Giraffe performing at their summer nights series). Also the wild animal park, now called the Safari Park.

We’ll probably be back there this summer, because our “memberships” to the zoo go through the end of august of 2012. And Steam Powered Giraffe will be playing there again.

Expensive plane ticket though.

My good friends daughter lives in San Diego...canyon fires burned her out once, but she rebuild in the same area...There is so much to see and the bus service is great to get around. spent one day on the ocean, just walking the beach....I think the Pacific is much more beautiful than the Atlantic....Her grandchildren and I loved walking the beach and seeing what came in and out of the tidal pools...She wasn't much for exploring so just soaked up the sun...found lots of critters when the tide went out and different ones when the tide came in, starfish, anemone it was a great afternoon and I got 3 more grand kids....I was grandma #2 Her daughter is a cracker jack and we were sitting around the table one evening and she said, Hey mom, visitors and fish start smelling after the 3rd day......We stayed for 10...

Margaritas, warm chips and FRESH salsa. YUM.

Lol about the doggie door, FRiend. I am pretty durn small myself, but am also more than just a smidge claustrophobic : o so such ideas rarely enter my little pointy brain ;}

Thank You Lord, for blessings without number.

The reason Rick Santorum can't win: Guys like him and his supporters are the one’s that no one wants to admit they invited to the party.

Newt is a great animal lover.

When asked by Piers Morgan which animal he admires most, Newt replied without hesitation: the elephant, because he has thousand of muscles in his trump , is big, lives long, is very sociable and intelligent and no one dare mess with him :)

My favorite Newt's picture is the one with a lion cub.

If you have the time, watch the interview which took place at the South Carolina zoo:

Wish I'd been there, too.

I can't believe he did the "Snore and Roar" at one time. That's pretty awesome!
