It does appear to be a Soviet style ‘house cleaning’ to ensure loyalty in preparation for some big action. Couldn't help but notice the names of some of these guards divisions, it reminds me of the Nazi's Adolf Hitler and Herman Goring division type of names.

I remember back in the late 1960s or early ‘70s when a large number of Russian Generals began to die of this “flu”.
Our intelligence began to wonder why so many died within a few weeks of each other.
