WASHINGTON General Electric Co. plans to hire 5,000 veterans over the next five years and invest $580 million to expand its aviation business.
The announcements Monday were part of a four-day event that the global conglomerate is hosting with partners in Washington, D.C., that focuses on issues such as manufacturing and job creation in America.
GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt heads up President Obama's 27-member jobs council, which also includes AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, AOL co-founder Steve Case and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.
GE said Monday that its "Hiring Our Heroes" partnership will help match veterans with jobs. The company, whose products range from jet engines to light bulbs, will also team with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to sponsor 400 veterans' job fairs this year. GE currently employs more than 10,000 veterans and has about 100 U.S. employee reservists currently serving overseas.
In addition, its aviation unit will add more than 400 new manufacturing jobs and open three new plants in Ellisville, Miss., Auburn, Ala., and Dayton, Ohio, next year. GE said that the plants are part of its efforts to create or rebuild 16 facilities and more than 12,000 new jobs. The company started production on its first new appliance line in more than 50 years last week at Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky.

GE: Those newly recruited servicemen and women will join over 10,000 U.S. military veterans currently employed by GE (about one in every 14 GE employees in the U.S. is a vet). Were expecting an influx of troops coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and they need jobs, said Kris Urbauer, program manager for GEs veterans initiative
The new tax credit of 2,400 per veteran perhaps? Did my math work out right? One point two million in tax credits? I wonder how long they must keep a veteran to receive the credit? Aren’t tax credits paid by the rest of us? I am a veteran, have two flag- draped coffins in my family before folks start the foolishness. This is just GE PR stunt to bilk taxpayers and probably veterans as well. I just don’t trust them.
Stat: Overall union membership increased by 49,000 from 2010 to 2011, including 15,000 new 16- to 24-year-old members, according to new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data out this morning [Jan 27, 2012]. An increase of 110,000 in the private sector was partially offset by a decline of 61,000 in the public sector, making the rate of union membership essentially unchanged at 11.8 percent, with some 14.8 million U.S. workers union members.
The Obama buy out of our military is complete.
O boy! Good point. So not only are we on the hook for Obama’s tax re- distribution (using us veterans as pawns), it’s union as well. Groan. Us veterans need to form a We are NOT pawns for politics, or something catchier LOL.
I almost was acquired by GE and have seen the whites in their eyes, so I could say a lot about the GE culture and values. But I don’t think it’s appropriate.
US jobs are US jobs, and that’s a good thing. I know the Dayton area for one can sure use ‘em. And hiring veterans is not only good PR but it’s good business.
That said, don’t infer any altruistic motives on the part of GE. This is a business calculation and the entire GE culture is about reducing every decision to that of a business calculation. What they know, as Boston Consulting Group and others have been saying for the past year or so, is that the pendulum is swinging back to favor US-based manufacturing, especially in certain industries.
GE isn’t perfect but they’re not the devil incarnate either. Overall this is good in the short-term for job growth and in the long-term indicates a positive trend for US manufacturing.
Buying votes. All it is with GE and our King.
Where are all of these “U.S.” GE aviation jobs going to come from?
They already sold GE Avionics to CAAC (China) in August.
This might be the “Small Jet-Segment Engines Program” GE has been working on, but they have ALREADY moved a lot of GE big engine production to CHINA and MALAYSIA.
And here, I thought Obama said corporate jets were BAD FOR AMERICA, and that you just couldn’t jet off to Aspen or Vegas anymore.
WILL NO ONE IN THE MEDIA CALL OUT THIS CRAP???

Enrons former CEO Ken Lay was pushing the Clinton and Bush White Houses to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change.
When Enron collapsed, AES and General Electric absorbed Enrons assets.
Ken Lay had set up a plan to build coal fired energy plants in third world counties, not affected by the Kyoto Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol would have closed the coal fired power plants in the U.S., increasing the cost of natural gas and decreasing the U.S.s dependency on coal, making it cheaper for their operations in Asia, South America and Africa.

I agree but if 5000 vets make out, better than the usual which is GE uses “green” initiatives to rip off the tax payer and vets get squat.
For the record, I am completely against crony capitalism. I would prefer they not get ANY anything. We’re literally only a few short steps away from straight fascism at this point.
GE Aviation has operations around the world including facilities used for engine manufacturing, engine overhaul, component repair, accessories, engine testing and on wing support.

With its accelerated growth rate and migration of population to urban areas, China is a market of tremendous opportunity for GE - particularly for our infrastructure businesses. GE's "Company to Country" strategy for China means localizing our business to China, building on local capabilities and developing local resources. more
Drones...wasn’t there some recent news about the use of drones over America?
this seems like mere attrition replacement.
GE commercials see coordinated with the Obama message.
GE is exporting jobs but the commercial says they have A factory in the USA. IOW a joke.
This is big brother propaganda. Our 20 gram ration of chocolate is being increased to 20 grams. big brother loves you.
That’s what they want you to think. On top of the vet subsidy, they get the other subsidies. This is a shameless use of veterans for a PR stunt. How long will they keep them employed? And, as someone else posted, it is union central.
Thanks for that Doug.. I didn’t like being used as a political pawn during my service, and I don’t like it today. I am also firmly against being used as a gender pawn or any other pawn.
