"My point is, how does one prepare - buy all sorts of dehydrated foods and items when we are biting into our savings a bit every month? My husband just about died last week when I told him I needed a root canal. "

There is good PREPPING advice on some of the links that Kartographer provides. I'm sure he will be glad to direct you to other sources too.

One trick I've discovered for saving money (on non-food items) is garage sales. I purchased two full 20 pound propane tanks this Saturday for five bucks each. I've bought camper stoves, Coleman lanterns, chain-saws canning pots/jars and power generators, etc for pennies on the dollar.

The end times are not here.

One hopes not, but at any rate, one cannot dispute that we are always getting closer :-)

Ezekiel 16:49
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

In software development, Aspergers is often considered a resume enhancement! Get your child started working on the next Facebook so that he/she can take advantage of all the foolish slaves of society :-)

. It’s just common sense.

Most people have no knowledge or training of this

Exactly correct. I am not able to afford the expensive dehydrated stuff either. But canned foods last a long time too. So every time I shop I spend 10 bucks on canned foods that will make a meal in a pinch. I’ve been doing that for a couple of years and I am at the point where I am not longer worried about food in a meltdown. Also if you have the land to have a garden do that too. The biggest worry is water, I am lucky to have a water well on my property. Spend a little time thinking about how to secure water should the gov supplied water stop flowing for some reason.

"We have one child going off to college in 2 years and another with Aspergers. "

You may find this interesting. I've posted this to the archaeology/anthropology threads for years.

The Neanderthal Theory

"In the past there have been numerous theories for the cause(s) of autism, Asperger's syndrome, ADHD and Tourette syndrome. Most of these theories can at best explain small parts of these diverse syndromes. Many of them extend their findings in spectacular ways to be able to claim to explain larger parts of the autism spectrum with little success."

It's been recently reported that the DNA of Europeans and Asians (not Africans) is about 2% Neanderthal.

My DNA haplogroups are R1b and 'V'...probably more than 2% Neanderthal too, lol.

Canned Food Last 30 Years Or Longer

"Among the canned food items retrieved from the Bertrand in 1968 were brandied peaches, oysters, plum tomatoes, honey, and mixed vegetables. In 1974, chemists at the National Food Processors Association (NFPA) analyzed the products for bacterial contamination and nutrient value. Although the food had lost its fresh smell and appearance, the NFPA chemists detected no microbial growth and determined that the foods were as safe to eat as they had been when canned more than 100 years earlier. The nutrient values varied depending upon the product and nutrient. NFPA chemists Janet Dudek and Edgar Elkins report that significant amounts of vitamins C and A were lost. But protein levels remained high, and all calcium values 'were comparable to today's products.'"

"NFPA chemists also analyzed a 40-year-old can of corn found in the basement of a home in California. Again, the canning process had kept the corn safe from contaminants and from much nutrient loss. In addition, Dudek says, the kernels looked and smelled like recently canned corn."

That’s some rant!

Are you against other types of insurance as well?

If you are *HOPING* for a scenario that involves pain or loss ...the(n) you are part of the problem.

Re: your post. Nice to see someone with some sense on "Prepper" threads.

Some prep = good sense. Generally, I'm prepared for the most likely castastrophe (likely weather-related, in my area), plus a little bit. I do surf through these threads once in awhile - occasionally there's a good idea or two. Other people can certainly disagree, everyone has their own definition of "reasonable".

But waking up every morning disappointed because there's another day without hordes of zombies to repel from my walled-in compound of underground bunkers? No thanks, I'll pass.

I've always wondered what these extreme preppers would do, if their worst-case scenario actually happens - to them. As in, the meteorite the size of NYC lands on THEIR bunker filled with 5 years of food, their armory, etc etc etc.

Man, that would be irony defined, right there.

consider shopping carefully and buying when things are on a good sale....

that's "prepping" of a sort...

you can't deny that inflation is eating away at our money....

we bought junk silver back in the Ruff days...sure, it might have been a stupid thing, but we still have those coins...if nothing else ,our grandkids can play with them...

you'll get thru....stuff of some kind is always on sale...make all your trips to a store count...look in the discount bins....use coupons...Goodwill/value village etc can have brand new clothing donated at times...so keep looking...

don't eat out...that is a big money waster...

I guess the good side is that with your money down maybe you're kid will be eligible for govt grants..

God bless...

I guess too a lot of folks would benefit from living with parents,or them living with you, or having an extended family sharing one house...

that's the way it used to be done and is still done today in many countries and in our country among immigrant populations....
