SEATTLE (AP) — Before Josh Powell was going to try to win back custody of his children last week, Washington state authorities received materials from Utah police that had been discovered on a computer in Powell's home two years ago. Authorities say the images depicted "incestuous" sex and were disconcerting enough that they prompted a psychologist to recommend that Powell undergo an intensive psychosexual evaluation.
But a lawyer for Powell's in-laws, who had custody of the boys, wasn't invited to see the computer-generated materials before the custody hearing — even though a Utah judge had specified in a sealed court order that he was one of the few people allowed to see them.
Had he seen the images, attorney Steve Downing said, he might have asked the court to change the terms of Powell's supervised visitation with the boys, such as by asking for the visits to be in a public place. Instead, Downing said he didn't learn until Thursday morning — four days after Powell killed himself and the boys in a house fire — that he was allowed to see them.
"That would have absolutely given me the opportunity to submit a declaration about our deep concern. I was approved ... to view those pictures and I was never notified," Downing said. "I could have gone into all the reasons why the visitation could have or should have been restricted."

Incestuous — it’s a sad remark on the times that this would seem rather tame today. People are still very shocked about child porn, but if it depicts a brother and sister, or a (grown) child and opposite sex parent (in something consensual in either case) — it gets little more than a yawn.
Or, maybe got into some hot argument over it, whereupon he flipped out.
I think he killed the Mom because she found out that he or his father or both were molesting the boys.
They were married in the Mormon temple and were seeing a church counselor. She had given him an ultimatum, come back to church or I’ll divorce you and take the children.
Doubt that she knew what was on his computer.
The hatchet/ blood letting had to do with religios traditions....

No sympathy for Josh, but I bet his father molested him when he was a boy.
No doubt the mother of the boys had found out what Josh & his dad were doing and that is why Josh (and maybe the father) killed her. Sounds like mommy was already dead when the kids saw her in the trunk of the car.
Josh was a psychopath, you could see that in his dateline interviews.
It seems there were plenty of warnings that he was mentally disturbed. I don’t understand why the authorities did not insist on supervised visits at a site where the boys had protection.
You saying the bloody hatchet job was by way of his mocking the church? Occam’s Razor would suggest that this was just another bloody wacko murder unless he actually said something about it.
The porn he had was about incest, not homosexual pederasty. Unless there were girls involved, this sounds like an odd theory at the least.
Read the two chapter mentioned above and then we can discuss it.
