France's First Mormon Temple Sparks Controversy
VOA NEWS ^ | February 08, 2012 | Lisa Bryant

The United States may get its first Mormon president this year, if Republican candidate Mitt Romney prevails in his bid. But in France, the Mormon faith is viewed with deep suspicion and a project to build the country's first Mormon temple is proving to be controversial.  The temple is expected to be located in the Paris suburb of Chesnay, where the temple is expected to be located.

Until recently, Chesnay was mostly known because of its proximity to Versailles, the dazzling 18th-century palace that was home to French "Sun King" Louis XIV.  But today, this small town west of Paris is making news because of another monument, a 7,000-square-meter Mormon temple, expected to be built here in the next few years.

From his office window, Chesnay Mayor Philippe Brillault points to an abandoned, asbestos-filled energy plant.  This is the property the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has acquired for its temple.  Further away, the spire of the Versailles palace church sparkles in the sun.

Brillault admits he was not thrilled to receive the church's request to acquire the property.  He says the Mormons have a negative image in predominately Catholic France, even if they may not deserve it.  Brillault says he granted the building permit after an investigation he commissioned found no reason to refuse it.

This came from a spokesman from the Département de la Redondance Département.

It certainly does bring up questions.
Every French newscast about our primaries starts out “and the Mormon, Mitt Romney.......”
Before this is over, we will all know way mire than we ever wanted to know about the Mormons.
Who would Mitt appoint as Ambassador?

The French view mormons with suspicion and resist the building of an LDS church in their midst? Well, they can rest easy... that church will never see the light of day, what with the minarets from the 15 surrounding mosques blocking the sun.

predominately Catholic France

Should be predominantly.

Also France is pretty obviously post-Christian at this point.

It’s probably the muzzies who are making the most noise.
Surely this must offend them.

Conventional Wisdom/Accepted Knowledge is that the Mittster made no headway in getting any froggie to accept Brigham Young’s theological construct during Mitten’s mission during the Vietnam War. In the intervening four-plus decades, similar excursions by the sincere Mormon bike-riding corps of 22-year-old “elders” have just now gotten enough froggie faithful to require a temple. Sounds like the efficiency conversion ratio is a little anemic, IMO. Guess that gets amped up when you factor in that baptism for dead relatives thing rolling, though.

Interesting, since Mitt did his mission in Paris. I didn’t realize the extent to which Mormons weren’t well received in France.
