On the sidelines of the UN talks on the Syria resolution, Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin has threatened the Qatari foreign minister with the demolition of the Arab country, reports the Algeria ISP news agency. So he has, hasn’t he?
Talking to Churkin on Saturday, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said: “I warn Russia, if Moscow uses the veto and does not support the UN’s resolution, it will lose all the Arab countries.”
“If you talk to me like that, there will be no Qatar today,” Churkin replied in a low voice. That’s Algeria ISP story.
Egypt’s Al-Ahram adds that the Russian envoy said he represents “the great Russia and talks only to important people on its behalf.”
Though Moscow’s relations with Qatar grew strained after the beating up of a Russian diplomat at Qatari passport control, on Monday the news outlets ran not just before the hounds but before the hare.
“I have been dealing with the mass media for 25 years now, but have never seen anything quite like this,” startled Churkin told RT. “This is such a blatant lie.”
“If you do want to threaten anyone, you would never do it in front of 20 people, including ambassadors and members of the Arab League and the UN,” says the diplomat, who met the Qatari FM three times the previous week, but never privately.
Churkin says he shook hands with Sheikh Al Thani in 2006 and they have enjoyed “quite friendly relations” ever since. The reports are “clearly” set to complicate relations between the two countries, he believes.
“Threats are not my style,” stressed the diplomat.
The Russians miss the day when they were important. The Brits and the French went through this period of mourning for the loss of their respective empires, too. Hopefully, the Russians will adapt to their new normal.
