A DEFIANT Julia Gillard has warned MPs to pull their heads in and show discipline in a plea for Labor to unite behind her.
The Prime Minister told Labor MPs at a special meeting - which was missed by about 20 members - that internal splits would be a gift for the Opposition and would distract from the Government's messages.
And at a barbecue for her troops at The Lodge last night, Ms Gillard pulled a surprise by bringing former prime minister Bob Hawke for a pep talk.
Ms Gillard moved to assert her leadership and stare down those pushing for Kevin Rudd to take back the top job, ahead of a return to Parliament tomorrow.
In an interview with Channel 7 last night, Ms Gillard says she makes no apology for being a political leader without a "crusty upper-class accent".

With any luck, she won't survive the week.
What crisis was the topic of the meeting?
Being surrounded by angry aborigines?
Her leadership and the fact that a significant section of her party, including many of the people who didn’t turn up, want to replace her as Prime Minister.
The fact that they didn’t turn up, therefore...
I’m not an Australian, but based on all I’ve learned about her, she is a vile women.
How much does all of this have to do with her lying about her plans for carbon taxes and her global warming hysteria?
That is a major reason for her unpopularity with the electorate - probably the single most important reason - and it’s her incredibly low poll results that are making her so unattractive to her party as leader now. The polls show that if an election was held tomorrow, they’d face an absolute landslide defeat with her as leader.
Will her government fall? Is the time right yet for the Liberals to come back?
It’s very hard to say what will happen to the Gillard government in the near future. They have a functional majority in the House of Representatives (which is what is needed to hold government) of two, but that includes two independents and a Green so it wouldn’t take that much for the government to fall, but there’s needs to be some trigger to make it happen and there’s not quite a smoking gun at the moment
If Labor decides to replace her, they will try to install a new leader by a vote of the Parliamentary Labor party. They can do this without triggering an election, but if she decided to, she could try and preempt it by going to the Governor General and asking for a general election and the Governor General would probably grant it. if that happened, the conservative Liberal party would expect to win and take government. Also, if for example, Labor replaced her with, say, Kevin Rudd, he might also ask for a general election in an attempt to exploit his personal popularity (he’s now significantly more popular than the Leader of the Opposition) but that would be a huge gamble on his part - the odds would be very much against Labor winning such an election, but they might think it was worth it to get their seemingly inevitable defeat over and done with and, perhaps, would be able to turn a landslide against them into a more narrow defeat.
