SANTA FE (KRQE) - The House Judiciary Committee late Friday approved a bill to ban drivers licenses for illegal immigrants after efforts to find a compromise failed.
A bipartisan group had been trying to find common ground with Gov. Susana Martinez and the Senate but couldn't do it.
One Democratic version would have continued the licenses but for shorter terms and with tighter restrictions.
There was also a proposal to give illegals temporary permits that could be used for driving but not for ID or other purposes.

That's an insult to the rest of us who must obey the laws.
Bump
Wish they’d do that here in WA but will never happen.
At some point they'll have to do something. I'm over on the peninsula, there was a noticeable downturn in Illegals in the area after the mortgage mess killed all the new development. Now, we're seeing families moving into the area, I'm guessing as a result of AZ and other states getting tough.
There should be the following restriction added.
"Only valid for driving South."
Expires Dec 1, 2012
and with tighter restrictions
Can only vote once...
Whadda ya mean, NO?
Racist! Racist!
.
Susana Martinez is a true conservative and a great governor - much better than any of the GOP Presidential contenders.
There’s a daily bus from Tijuana to the Tri-Cities. They’re still coming. Illegals get on in San Diego.
