MADRID - Spanish oil firm Repsol YPF SA has begun offshore drilling in Cuban waters as part of its global exploration operations, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday. Deep-water exploration drilling began about 50 kilometers north of Havana and will take at least 60 days to complete, this person added. Repsol is resuming exploration in the area after it failed to find exploitable oil in 2004. The U.S. Geological Survey has said there could be a substantial amount of untapped oil off the Cuban coast. The Repsol well is much closer to Florida than any other well in the region. U.S. authorities inspected the Scarabeo 9 drilling rig off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago and said the vessel complied with existing international and U.S. standards.

Cuba, se. Spain, se. Us, no.

Good news as it may mean that there will be additional oil on the world market.
It is insane that our Gov forbids us to drill in these waters, yet Spain, Cuba, China and Vietnam may have at it.
I thought Spain was all about GREEN energy?
“It is insane that our Gov forbids us to drill in these waters, yet Spain, Cuba, China and Vietnam may have at it.”
“These waters” where this drilling will be taking place are not within US Territory and thus we are forbidden to do drill due to international laws.
However, it does seem that the US does not have the will to drill in our waters off Florida as since January of 1981 our presidents and Congress have kept the Offshore Drilling Ban in place.
Even in international water off florida they whine that an oil spill would kill the Fla tourist economy, and they shut down company’s like Exxon.
Do they honestly think China will be better ecological stewards?
You’d think the eco-Nazis in and out of the Obama administration would be at a fever pitch right now against this drilling.
And yet, nary a peep.
The US will have the ability to monitor this platform for compliance of industry standards.
Hopefully, they will not screw-up like BP.
I would rather they monitor productive US platforms.
Every cloud has a silver lining. At least if/when a train wreck happens, they won't be able to blame one of our companies.
Oh, they will tar them all with the same brush as always.
The "Macondo" experience 18 months ago will go a long way to fight that mythology. The effects of the spill were short-lived, even where they were not cleaned up by human agency. People underestimated the potency of natural marine life to adapt, overcome, and demolish the plume of oil that issued from "Macondo".
