Newt should be strong enough on his own merits and not win because someone drops out. Since that seems to be the concensus that Newt can only win if Santorum drops out means that Newt is a very weak nominee.

Santorum is the weak candidate. No one said Newt can ‘only’ win if Santorum drops out, but right now he seems to be Mitt’s right hand. I’m speaking more to Santorum’s state of mind in staying in the race when he clearly has no chance of winning the nom. I question his purpose.

BINGO !
You said it, Newt should be able to stand on his own merits and not be the Goldilocks candidate waiting for the ripe time, or proper moment to make his move, or wait for someone to drop out considering all the money he has.
If anything this proves that Rick Santroum has staying power considering the disproportionate amount of money that Romney and Newt has compared to Rick Santorum.
Another factor ? Newt got all the big endorsements, it didn't help him in Florida.
We were assured by the Newt supporters that SC and Florida was in the bag for Newt..
Newt has ONLY won one state so far.
