Why couldn't Newt take the lion's share of 80%? That's what he did in South Carolina, why couldn't he do it in Florida?
Newt's fundamental problem isn't Santorum, it's Romney -- or himself. If he can't take votes from Romney, he can't win, and it's as simple as that.
He had a much better debate performance in SC, and capmaigned better, and guess what -- even with Santorum taking a higher percentage of the vote than he did in FL, Newt won by almost the same margin Romney won in Florida.

And make no mistake, the LSM began broadcasting results before polls were closed. In the general election they don’t do this. It injured Bush’s vote count in 2000.
I’ve no doubt it injured Gingrich’s yesterday.
Rubio won that for Romney with his 2 attacks on Gingrich.
Gingrich remained gracious to him, but he has no doubt that Rubio attacked him when it was unnecessary.
It immensely injured him with the Hispanic vote. And what Gingrich said was true: Romney is the most anti-illegal of the 4 remaining candidates.

My prediction: In the general election, Mittens (if, God forbid, he is the Republican nominee) will lose thirty of the thirty-three counties he won last night.

Nonsense. Santorum is a fantasy vote, and the delusional indignation that’s propelling him on his divine flight are sabotaging our immoral crusade to regain our liberties.
As far as I’m concerned, a vote for Santorum is a vote for Romney.
My opinion on this matter has absolutely nothing to do with Rick outside the context of this race. If Santorum had the advantage, I’d be arguing against Newt Perot. I do believe Gingrich is less of a big government statist, however.
Sorry -- I didn't realize 100% of the Santorum vote in Florida would have landed in Newt's corner. And that would have edged Newt to -- wait for it -- 1.2% below Romney.
Dang, Santorum really stole that one from Newt.

Which means an actual vote disparity of 0.6%. If Rick endorsed Newt over Romney, the outcome could have easily tilted in Newt’s favor. So there’s no need to be so acute, ‘Angel’.

It really is a crying shame the most qualified candidate has to rely on someone else to put him over the top. Poor old Newt.
It looks like Newt got the old south and Mitt got the Northeast retirees and the Hispanic vote, thanks to Rubio.
There's a silver lining there.
Other than that, the result, IMO, was due half to Mitt's ad budget and half to Newt's poor debate performance last week.
Newt can fix his debating skills with coaching, which he should get ASAP. The coach needs to be pretty rough on him.

I don’t have anything against Santorum. I just want my damn liberty back.
I completely understand -- we all do. My wife and I have been socked in the mouth with government regulation, both from the Fed and Dodd-Frank just this past year.
We decided this time around we were going to support the candidate that most closely parallels our principles, and of the three remaining front runners we believe that's Santorum. I wish there were others in the mix -- like DeMint. We flirted with Newt, briefly, and even donated to him, but when he started down the class warfare path last week we went back to Santorum.
If (when) Santorum pulls out we'll support Newt. And if, God forbid, Newt can't secure the nomination we'll hold our nose -- tight -- and pull the lever for Romney. Obama can't have another term.
This is a nerve-wracking election for all of us...
