U.S. military says Taliban set to retake power: report

The United States military has said in a secret report that the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, are set to retake control over Afghanistan after NATO-led forces withdraw from the country, Britain's Times of London newspaper said Wednesday.

"Many Afghans are already bracing themselves for an eventual return of the Taliban," the newspaper said, quoting the report. "Once ISAF (NATO-led forces) is no longer a factor, Taliban consider their victory inevitable," it quoted the report.

The Times said the "highly classified" report was put together by the U.S. military at Bagram air base in Afghanistan for top NATO officers last month. The BBC also carried a report on the leaked document.

Despite the presence of about 100,000 foreign troops, violence in Afghanistan is at its worst since the Taliban were ousted by U.S.-backed Afghan forces in 2001, according to the United Nations.

Thanks,Obama, snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory -- he reduced and demoralized the military, giving the Taliban hope to stay and fight another day.

We knew this would happen. Obama couldn’t hardly wait for them to do it. He wants to make them legitimate.

Well, its not like there are other political parties to choose from. The place is run by family and tribes. The Taliban is the only entity that crosses family and tribe ties.

Maybe Ron Paul should head there and become the poppy Czar.

I know we saw it coming, but it IS a BFD because it cost how many thousand of our guys and how many trillions that we couldn't afford?

This neo-con nation-building bs has to stop. As others said, nuke it from orbit.

Karzai and many other Afghan ingrates deserve to stew in their Taliban juices. Once we’re out we should confine ourselves to bombing Taliban/terrorist training camps there.

The Afghan government and cronies are mercilessly corrupt, and it’s easy for the Taliban to portray the U.S. as pro-corruption since we’re the only thing keeping that regime in power. It’s not a large leap from that point to say that western, non-Islamic influences are the corrupting force.

As such, most Afghans are a least sympathetic to their countrymen and co-religionists who champion Islam.

Nation-building in the Islamic world won’t work. Never will.

Sadly, that was the Democratic position going back to 2001. Dare we say that they were right?

No surprise - you could not toilet train those bloody savages, much less democratize them. We should nuke them and while in the neighborhood nuke Mecca also.
