“Some people will insist that he should have been able to understand such despicable behavior, and they will never accept that some among us come from an era where such repulsive activities were utterly inconceivable”
What utter rot! Years ago such activities were not the stuff of movies and popular entertainment but “such repulsive activities WERE utterly conceivable” and well known.
The extent to which the POS in question was an “icon” reflects the undue (dare I say perverted?) attention given to games/sports in this society.
I wonder where you got this number, or maybe what you mean by "sexually molested." I guess this "time" passed me by. I wouldn't say I was ever sexually molested. I don't know a single friend who ever indicated to me that he (or she) was ever molested as a child, or even as an adult (unless we're talking about normal adolescent behavior).

Your premise is the one that’s wrong if you think that Paterno had no understanding of todays homosexual culture. First off he was a Roman catholic and I’m certain that he had heard about the pedophile priest scandal and all its nasty details. Secondly, to say this man was an educator, supposedly a very intelligent man, and had and never heard of such a thing is plain BS.
The fact of the matter is there was a great deal of distance between what Paterno appeared to be and what he really was.
I can respect folks who embraced the image he portrayed, but in reality, Penn State was a thug program who played by their own rules, rule of law and decency be damned if wins were churned out on the field.
Paterno revealed his true character by his actions.
From the ridiculous headline, you’d think the article was about Christ.
What part of “HE DID REPORT IT TO THE POLICE” don’t you understand??? He reported it to the duly constituted, fully empowered campus police - who have all the standing of your local constabulary. The Pennsylvania State Police had already washed their hands of it once before.
Good way to put it. Paterno simply stayed way, way too long. He should have retired 15 years ago, but I guess being an icon is addictive stuff.
He controlled everything about the program EXCEPT the showers.
In the witch-hunt environment in which we live, it takes real guts to stand up for virtue and character and to understand that character runs deep. Everyone agrees when we see a Bill Clinton-type and say: wait a minute, this guy looks good but he's really, really bad. But few will listen when so many associated with Paterno say: wait a minute, this guy was really, really good!.
I know that JoePa was not about football alone.
I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Why is it that some people on FR can't respond to anything without attacking the poster with some asinine comment like yours. I got news fer ya jack, It's not my responsibility to do anything about registered sex offenders. Stop trying to blow pink smoke. It WAS Paterno's responsibility to report wrongdoing in his organization particularly when it was reported to him as it apparently was.
He got paid what $750,000 annually? For that salary he should be expected to be on top of anything that would reflect badly on his organization and NOT hide it and expect it would just go away. He may not have done or condoned the acts, but it was his responsibility to keep the house clean and he didn't. I reiterate, screw him
My father and father in law were well aware of what child molesters were all about and they were from the same era.
Obviously so much hatred here for Paterno that my comments were mis interpreted. Or perhaps I said them clumsily. Or both.
I was simply pointing out the basis for why Paterno might be given a break on this to some degree. I also pointed out that certainly part of the equation was his protection of his program, and that was a bad thing.
He could have called 911. He could have attempted to find out who this child was.
But he lobbed it off to somebody else and called it a day.
Amen!
The leftwing board of Penn State considered Joe Paterno an anachronistic conservative. They hated his standards, morals, and virtues. They saw a chance to scapegoat him and like typical liberal vipers, they couldnt wait to strke.
You nailed it.
How about banning him from the showers? How difficult would that have been. He could have said Jerry, I don’t care that you rape kids, just don’t do it in my showers.
Instead, by his actions, he told the world Jerry, I don’t care that you rape kids.
Paterno’s lie about not being aware of kiddie molestation because of his age and era, is the blatant lie that it is. He never told his kids not to take candy from strangers? Only a fool would believe such a story.

We’re also suppose to believe that a football coach who spent his life interacting with young men never heard about homosexuality.
