Tim Thomas: Controversy 'media-driven'

OTTAWA -- Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, who has become something of a political lightning rod lately, weighed in Friday on his beliefs that the federal government is "out of control."

Thomas, who's drawn criticism for choosing not to attend the White House ceremony Jan. 23 honoring the reigning Stanley Cup champion team, reiterated that he believes his decision has been blown out of proportion.

"[The controversy] is all media-driven and it has been from the start. Everything that I said and did was as an individual. It was not as a representative of the Boston Bruins," Thomas said Friday at All-Star Weekend in Ottawa. "All it has to do is with me. But it's separate from hockey. That's my personal life and those are my personal views. Those are my personal beliefs. It has nothing to do with hockey. It has nothing to do with this All-Star Game. It has nothing to do with the Boston Bruins."

Despite being chastised publicly by the likes of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Sen. Scott Brown, Thomas remained unfazed Friday by the controversy that seemingly won't die. "I don't think I should address stuff that's made up out of thin air," Thomas said. "I would really appreciate if people would leave my teammates and my family out of it. I'm looking forward to getting back on the ice because that's what I do and that's what I love. I'm still going to have a lot of fun with it."

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who as an All-Star captain selected Thomas for his team with his second draft pick, offered support Friday for his beleaguered teammate.

“Despite being chastised publicly by the likes of... Sen. Scott Brown”

The political and media elites are willfully igoring the fact that the massive growth of the federal gov’t is a major concern to a large percentage of Americans and upwards of 40% of Americans despise Obama and his media sychophants.

Tim is being applauded in a lot of places that are not being reported on by the MSM.

These liberal media clowns live in a bubble and cannot understand how anyone would diss Obama. They are calling his belief in the constitution “radical.” It’s really like nothing I have ever seen. Story after story about trades and unnamed sources calling him expletives.

This is the same media who 4 years ago golf clapped when Red Sox Theo Espstein (GM) and John Henry (owner) dissed Bush. Now when it’s their guy, all hell breaks loose.

They do not realize the backlash they are getting. They forget to realize the Dem base/Obama adorers are generally Blacks, Hispanics, Rich White Guilty Libs, OWS hippies, enviro whack jobs, etc. Not exactly the fan base of NHL/Bruins - whose demo is white males over 30 - the one group that despises Obama. Even in Boston.

I guarantee he gets a standing O on Tuesday.

Agree. That last time I checked this was a free country... I think.

Brown needs to mind his own damn business and stick to his own damn job... fixing this broken and broke Nation.

Further, I don’t understand the need to drag all championship teams to The White House. I think Presidents have more important things to do than get face time with athletes.

They need to knock off that crap... by the by, I wonder who pays for the airfare for these teams. I don’t think the head office of the teams do?

One interesting aspect of your post is that it accurately points out the ‘coalition’ nature of the democrat base. That’s the key to beating them, regularly. Split off some groups from the coalition and the democrats lose. We should be encouraging ‘green’ candidates, unfettered socialist candidates, etc. to run.
