How about some land along the CA border? What about buying contiguous land on both sides?
Land along the border is very inexpensive. A good guy to reach on the end runs the site mooersrealty.com. If you come from a Northern State the climate is similar...those from the South may find it a bit chilly though. It is certainly a food production center though.
