That was between Barry Goldwater and Nelson Rockefeller, not Romney.

Goldwater was the candidate backed by the TRADITIONAL REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT. His opponents were either cultural, social or religious parvenues ~ not fully accepted into the Republican structure.

Goldwater's wife had OLD MONEY. Her friends had even more OLD MONEY. They owned the stuff that made America the winner in WWII.

Rockefeller wasn't in their league!
