Late-night comedian Conan O'Brien opened his monologue last night with this:
"The National Hockey League Champion Boston Bruins visited the White House today. President Obama told them he loves hockey as much as any black guy who grew up in Indonesia."
True enough, Obama is no fan of hockey. He's been to Wizards games and Nationals games and college games. But he didn't attend any Washington Capitols games, even when the NHL team was in the playoffs just a few blocks from the White House.
Still, every president needs regular doses of photo ops with him getting another personalized jersey from professional or collegiate athletes. It's a tradition. And the athletes seem to enjoy the moment too.
In his remarks for the cameras, Obama singled out several players for special mention, including Boston's popular goalie, Tim Thomas:
"Tim Thomas posted two shutouts in the Stanley Cups finals; set an all-time record for saves in the postseason. He also earned the honor of being only the second American ever to be recognized as the Stanley Cups Playoffs MVP."
All true.
But awkward moment.
Tim Thomas wasn't there. He skipped the White House event. A political statement.

Now that’s class!

As a Massachusetts resident, a Bruins fan and a conservative, I think the world of this man.
If he wore that helmet in some states, he would be stopped by the cops as an extremist....Go Gadsden!
One man plays with hockey pucks for a living; the other is a “living hockey puck”, with the same amount of intelligence.
I thought he was suppose to have spent much of his childhood in Hawaii? Anyone who grew up in another country, save someone who has grown up on a military base because their parent is in the military, doesn't qualify as having undivided loyalties, as a natural born citizen. He is exactly the reason, a walking example of why the framers made sure, in the Constitution, that nobody with undivided loyalties would become our President.
If Joe Biden was there, he would have added, “Stand up, Tim!”
Thomas is not starting tonight as we have another excellent goalie from some other country who I love yet I can’t help but love Thomas more! He is on my shirt...hahaha I am sitting a little to the right of the goalie a few rows back.
Tukka Rask. And he sucks tonight. Of course, Thomas will be blamed by the sports media hacks for causing a distraction. He can’t win.
Hussein 0bama, kenyan/indonesian marxist would be dictator

Thomas isnt kneeling for Obama.
Go Tim! Go Bruins!
Hockey is far too white for Obama.
Do we run Tim instead of Sen. Brown?
EXCELLENT! Freeping from the game...LOOK OUT FOR THE PU-
Seriously, I'll bet politics are in his future ;o)
UVM, a very good education!
Thomas and wife Melissa[13] have three children: daughters Kiley, born August 2000 and Kelsey, born May 2005, and son Keegan, born September 2006.[14] Thomas is a Republican and has stated that the person he would most like to have dinner with is conservative TV pundit Glenn Beck[15]. After winning the Stanley Cup, Thomas skipped the traditional victors’ meet-and-greet with the Barack Obama at the White House; he was the only active Bruin to not attend.[16]
Ah, he probably just had something more important to do, like picking up dog crap in the back yard.
