I’m copying another FReeper’s post that was very important to me (as a betrayed spouse). I want it to be known that if these things ARE true - it certainly goes a LONG way toward ameliorating the slam against Newt;
“The truth about Newt is not to be found in the MSM.

His first wife was the high school teacher who molested him when he was a minor, just a student in high school. She became pregnant and so he married her. She was the one who asked for a divorce, and later she was operated on for a benign tumor. Do you see how the media has twisted this story?

He and Marianne Ginther were having an affair during the last years of his first marriage. It was evidently a stormy relationship because they were legally separated twice, the second time for six years. Newt eventually asked for a divorce.

The only reason the MSM is making an issue of any of this is in an attempt to alienate the social conservatives from Newt Gingrich.

This man was carrying a troubled emotional burden while serving in Congress but he sought counseling, joined AA and eventually turned his life around after a religious conversion.”

They are excellent points (if true).

I’ve been in the Conservative movement for 30 years. I’ve been there, met Newt in the mid-80’s, watched his life and career. He’s had some great achievements. He’s also had some massive failures — personally, philosophically, politically.

He may be a man JimRob can support — and the majority of FreeRepublic. And I might end up pulling the lever for him in the end. But I will not campaign for him. I cannot trust him. He has not proven himself trustworthy over the last 3 decades.

The the contrary, Newt has shown himself to be a master of doublespeak, an expert at talking a good game, but then failing to carry through in most of his promises, while finding a way to benefit himself and excuse his own excesses.

I am NOT a Romney supporter. I do NOT like Mitt Romney. I started the same place as JimRob — supporting Sarah Palin. I understand why she didn’t run, and it saddens me that she chose not to — though I understand why. I then supported Michele Bachman, but she dropped out before the SC Primary. I chose last Saturday to vote for Rick Santorum, because although I am not crazy about all his positions on issues, I believe he is the closest thing to a Constitutional Conservative we have still in the race at this point who ALSO has personal Character and integrity.

I will continue to hope and pray Santorum picks up steam. Otherwise, otherwise, we will be faced with the establishment man, Mitt Romney, or the slick talking Progressive who I find it extremely to trust on personal issues — Newt Gingrich. That’s not a choice, that’s an insult to Constitutional Conservatives — and either one guarantees Obama 4 more years. Mark it down.
