Even if they were, you need a medical grade stainless steel for something that is going to be embedded somewhere in you body.

Aren’t paper clips stainless steel? I'd guess with the price of stainless, it would be overkill to make paper clips out of it. Paper clips don't have to be rust resistant, stand up to the elements or last for decades.

Some paper clips are made of stainless steel, but others are made of galvanized steel wire or brass.
