I don't know ... most of our big policies (and policy problems) are thoroughly bi-partisan in their character, and ultimately will be bi-partisan in their resolution. This doesn't mean the solution is kumbaya-ing across the aisle, it means that one party will take a strong stand that ultimately draws the other party from opposition, to ambivalence, to support (however begrudging).
This means to me that what's more important than winning in 2012 is making 2012 a pivot about ideas that solve problems. It would be worse for Romney to win as an (effectively) status quo candidate than for Gingrich to lose with a strong program to make Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security solvent in a way that is politically acceptable to senior citizens and doesn't tax away the opportunity and incentive for risk-taking and hard work. (Not that he actually has such a program at the present, but one can always hope ... and, who knows, maybe Romney could come up with such a program.)
