Rita, the establishment is exposing their truest fear by pushing the ridiculous canard that Newt will cost the GOP the House and any chance at the senate. The only danger we have of losing the House is if Boehner and McConnell keep trying to work with Obama, Pelosi and Reid. The dealing in 1 year since the Tea Party victory is simply a disaster, and the responsibility lies at the feet of the establishment Republicans.

From my viewpoint the all-out war in the GOP is already started. If the establishment succeeds in defeating Newt, they succeed in defeating themselves. This is the revelation. Better to take down the conservatives and suffer defeat too, than to let the conservatives win and not only suffer defeat, but suffer long-term, if not permanent, banishment. The establishment IS the entrenched power that Newt is talking about.

The establishment made the embarassing, inexplicable deal that Boehner and McConnell struck in December 2010 with a lame duck congress, the deal that was supposed to cut $100B and we had to have a hell of a fight to keep the Bush tax law in place. We found out there were no cuts. The entrenched establishment had that embarassing showing this past August over the government shutdown, again over tax increases, and no spending cuts. Boehner, Pelosi McConnell and Reid are all part of the same hypocritical criminal enterprise that is killing our country. Now those same criminals are readying to give Obama another $1.2T this year and there is not even a fart over it. This is what is killing us!

We know that when Newt rose to power, all hell broke loose over the Contract with America, and Newt had to do most of the fighting himself. He drove the balanced budgets, welfare reform, tax cuts, and drove Clinton screaming and crying to the middle. Newt was the reason for “Triangulation”. He pushed the Clinton Impeachment. Without him, we would have had President Gore in 2000. The worthless Republican senate had no guts and never forgave Newt for embarassing them. These are the real reasons for that phony baloney ethics issue where over 80 baseless charges were thrown out. I remember that and I get so mad rethinking it now.

Newt is the establishment’s worse nightmare, and that is the source of the war we are now going to fight.

I’ve been pondering Andrea Mitchells’ - and for y’all who don’t know, she’s been married to Alan Greenspan for 83 years - subdued and hesitant assessment of the debate, particularly Newt, and it struck me she was probably galvanized that Paul might capitulate to Newt.

Talk about the elite jumping out of windows.

Thanks. I’d like to hear more. I was a busy young mom in the mid 90’s and really couldn’t pay a lot of attention to what was going on with Newt — and at the time, who really cared? Life was good — and the country, was, at any rate, FAR more fixed on what was going on with Clinton and his intern.

I really want to hear the “facts” about Newt’s so-called resigning in disgrace ...thing. Didn’t seem to mean a hill of beans at the time.

All I know, and all I remember about Newt from that time — is I became a conservative at that time — and much of the reason was due to Newt. He did at that time what he always does ...articulated the conservative position in a way that just totally persuaded me. He WILL do this again, if we allow him to!!! The night of that republican takeover sweep of the congress was probably one of the most exciting nights of OUR political lives — we toasted to EACH seat won that evening by a Republican ...it was GLORIOUS.
