If that’s the case, then my ancestors were illegal aliens too. From Scotland, by the way. They just walked across the border from Canada before the Civil War. But they were allowed to stay here because the head of the family joined the Union Army. That way they became citizens.

That’s funny because my ancestors on my mother’s side came here with Champlain. He married an Abenaki woman and was living in Canada in the area which is now just south of the northern state line of Vermont. When Vermont’s boundries were drawn, “the border crossed him” and the family became Americans. We got lucky, IMHO.
