Er, there ain't no such thing a “inert Mercury”.

Elemental liquid Mercury is pretty stable unless you heat it and form a vapor. It doesn't go around attacking other compounds and reacting with them (unlike Chlorine).

If you allow an acid to act on it, or something, then it becomes toxic.

The whole ban on mercury thermostats, switches, mirrors, thermometers etc is just another big hoax.

The highly toxic fluorescent bulb is whole different matter.
