It only makes good sense. It doesn’t take anything out of a science-fiction novel to put your world upside down.
A Katrina, an earthquake, a mid-west-sized flood can take down normal supply lines and utility lines for even weeks.
And the most obvious is the loss of your job. If in the present economy you lost your job, how long will it be before you go back to work? You should work toward having enough on hand to see you through.
If you can survive a couple months out of work from whats in your pantry, you can also survive a bank collapse, or a Katrina for about that same period of time too.
Whatever happens, you should prepare for the family members who show up at your doorstep. You aren’t going to turn them away, so you’d better have a little extra.
We saw that a few years ago when a really bad ice storm knocked out the power for several days.
People went into a panic. One woman was so unprepared she had to put her batteries in her radio in the day and use them in a flashlight at night.
Others were so stranded in their homes the National Guard was called out for rescue.
We lost power but did well on lanterns and oil lamps. Warm and snug as a bug in a rug.
The National guard made it to a cabin back in the woods and found a 90 year old woman doing just fine They made her leave her home anyway.
Then there was the deep snow last year. We could not get out but still did well. There is an erie quite that settled on this area as no one was going anywhere.
We've had numerous power outages; after being out of power for over a week I bought a heavy-duty generator that can tie into the house wiring. It sucks having no fridge or power. When we had the quake in 1989 in SF, it was a wake-up call to get prepared. No power, no street lights, no gas stations, no cell phone service, closed stores, etc. We knew things would be okay after a couple weeks. But if the SHTF in 2012 it won't be okay for 6 months or more. The zombies will roam.
