I like the way CynicalBear put it on another thread...

Quote, "Every woman I have talked to personally says that the ex is lying. They, and I, think she was clingy, needy, and manipulative and was jealous of Newt putting so much time in his career. When he said Colista would allow him to do what he wanted he meant in his career. His ex needs to lie about that to protect her own low self esteem. She’s a vindictive, nasty, and jealous person trying to bring him down to get revenge. Now it has come out that she actually tried to profit off his position and the FBI actually investigated her. This is backfiring on her just as the whole thing with Congress accusing him backfired on them and will again."

My circle thinks she is a gold digger and a player. And her timing stinks of a manipulator. No sympathy is forthcoming..today or tomorrow.

She’s a homewrecker. But then, Newt chose her and left his wife for her.

Still doesn’t excuse what Newt did to wife number 1. Marianne isn’t a saint and neither is Newt. If we’re going to condemn Marianne for being bitter, then shouldn’t we have something to say about the source of the bitterness.

Marianne got involved with Newt when he was a congressman with rising status. I think she wanted him for the status.

Researching the second marriage a bit:

In 1987, the couple separated. Newt claimed that he received a phone call on his birthday from his wife declaring that she was leaving. When he got home, he found only the guest bed and a TV. Newt and Marianne maintained separate residences for 6 years and worked out a separation agreement that was notarized, but never filed. In late 1993 or early 1994 the two reconciled and moved back in together. Marianne and Newt separated again on May 10, 1999 and Newt filed for divorce on July 29, 1999.
Newt was a Congressman from 1979 thru November 1998, when he resigned. I think his "reconciliation" with Marianne was a sham to avoid having her badmouth him while he politically could not afford scandal. Meanwhile, she benefited from the sham by being part of the DC social scene, getting to play Queen Bee.

Meanwhile, Newt's real romantic figure was Callista, with whom he reportedly started in 1994 (the same year he had "reconciled" with Marianne). After he resigned from Congress in 1998, he no longer had any need to maintain the marriage and divorced Marianne in 1999.

Google MaryAnn Gingrich’s FBI file. She got caught trying to sell influence...IMO it was only because of Newt’s position that the matter was dropped. (FBI file says she was “mentally unstable”

They were separated six years before the divorce. DId Newt stay married so she could receive the professional help she needed?
