By definition, if you run for president, anything is on the table. Ask Grover Cleveland. Ask Andrew Jackson. Anything is on the table. I accept that, but I don't have to participate in the conversation."
That was Newt Gingrich, last May, when I asked him about whether intrusion into candidates' personal lives had gone too far. At the time, Gingrich's biggest headache was his Tiffany shopping habit, but Gingrich obviously had issues of sexual misconduct on his mind as well: Cleveland was assailed for allegedly having an out-of-wedlock child, Jackson for a possibly bigamous marriage.
And I thought Gingrich had it about right: When you run for president, you open yourself to the kind of searching scrutiny that a finger-pointing, voice-raised Gingrich condemned at Thursday night's debate.
"I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office, and I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that," Gingrich told CNN's John King.
Gingrich, denouncing the reports from his second ex-wife as "trash" and "false," continued. "Every person in here has had someone close to them go through painful things," he said, to wild cheering from the audience.
"To take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine."

Ludicrous on it's face.
I believe all 4 sincerely believe they would be the correct answer to the times.
All 4 would do their best, as they see it, to save the Republic.
All 4 know the Republic is in near-term existential danger.
All 4 would be better than the anti-American Barak Obama.
And, if character was the defining, essential requirement for effective leadership, King David...yes THAT King David...would never have assumed the throne.
You know, the fella that Jesus Christ was DIRECTLY descended from. The fella that God Jehova his own self both placed in power...and forgave for the murder of his principal general...just so David could have a piece of her a$$.
The "Holier-than-thous sh!t has crossed the threshold of splitting the party and destroying the republic.
It's crossed the threshold of war.
I have already voted for an adulterer to be CIC, even after I had said I would NEVER vote for this man. I really believed when I cast that vote it was my duty for love of country.
Now for all the ‘holier’ than thou, that say I can only vote for flawless characters I would like to quote something for to ‘ponder’ as this election season give US our opportunity to ‘hire’ a new leader.
Jeremiah 3:8 (This is what the Heavenly Father had Jeremiah pen and it is still relevant to this day.)
AND I saw, when for all causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of DIVORCE; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared NOT, but went and played the harlot also.
SO DIVORCE and/or adultery is NOT the unpardonable SIN... YES it is a sin, but is is not ranked differently than any of the other TEN. Our Creator is a divorcee, course HE was NOT the sinner.
Now how many that are so offended by NEWT’s sins believe for one minute he would have refused our neighbor to the NORTH offer to sell US oil.
WHY are we allowing the pit of vipers who are very busy destroying US FORCE US to revisit a political candidate's personal SINS, while our economy is circling literally the drain?
EVEN on NEWT'S worst day he is head and shoulders above those who poke their finger in our eye and strip US clean bare.
*shrug*
In a slightly more perfect world, we’d be able to take Newt’s fire and his (mostly) conservative stances and fuse them with Romney’s squeaky clean personal life into one super-candidate.
As it is, we’ve got to make the best of the hand we’re holding in 2012. Gingrich is far from my ideal candidate, and I don’t agree with many of the things he has done in the past. If he gets the nomination, however, I’ll do my best to help him get elected. Because I have a feeling an Obama 2nd term will make the 1st term seem like a paragon of fiscal restraint and mainstream social values by comparison.
Men of accomplishment and strong personality are attractive to women.
The human race would be far less vigorous if this were not true.
Newt’s women are far, far, less important to the country than having a forceful president who can bring the ship of state back to a good course, and who will have to stand up to all sorts of obstructionists while doing that.
If he could bring us back to true capitalism, dump government overregulation, and steer us away from socialism, I really don’t care if he wants a different woman every week.
Note to Ruth: there is a time and place for every discusion - a debate is not the time or place to discuss an individual indiscretion.
OTOH, had the moderator asked: “Throughout the primaries, several candidates have been assailed with allegations of marital infidelity. How important is marital fidelty as a qualification for office, and, how should such allegations affect the people’s decision making?”, we could have had a discussion of morals & ethics and thier importance.
The Obama records which have not been released include; Passport records, Obama kindergarten records, Punahou School records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, University of Chicago scholarly articles, Illinois State Bar Association records, Illinois State Senate records/schedules(said to be lost), Medical records, Obama/Dunham marriage license, Obama/Dunham divorce documents, Soetoro/Dunham marriage license, Adoption records and of course the long-form Certificate of Live Birth.
ALL of the Above = character
I would not marry Newt. I would not marry Bush. I would not marry Ronald Reagan, come to think of it. I am not shopping for a husband. I am not in search for a Pope.
It is always going to boil down to this for our guys. Selected hit pieces (by MSM) scheduled a day before a big vote (think late October) We need to see some Obama investigative journalism by FOX, Washington Times etc and we need it now. This is fertile ground and I wish it would be exploited.
Jimmy Carter had pretty good character. Reagan was divorced and remarried.
Good leaders aren’t necessarily angels.
As far as I’m concerned, being married for 40 years and going to church is not on my list of requirements for a US President. I voted for Newt because he is clearly and forcefully promising to do what I want done. I voted for Newt because he isn’t afraid to call out the media, or anybody for that matter, when he doesn’t like what they do. I voted for Newt because he isn’t afraid to say exactly what he thinks and back it up with reasons and facts. I voted for Newt because he’s not afraid to admit mistakes and move in another direction. I voted for Newt because he’s the smartest man in most rooms.
I would have preferred Jim DeMint or any of a number of others at the beginning of this process, but they didn’t run.
