In his tenure as archbishop of Milwaukee, soon-to-be Cardinal Timothy Dolan forged a special relationship with the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, at Holy Hill.
A Mary devotee, Dolan helped to win the Hubertus shrine's Vatican designation as a basilica, and he presided over a special Mass celebrating that honor in November 2006.
Dolan will return to Holy Hill on April 28, this time as a cardinal, for a Mass of Thanksgiving to commemorate his elevation in the Roman Catholic Church.
"It's a great honor. We're very excited. We think this is the first time a cardinal has ever said Mass at Holy Hill," said Father Don Brick, the shrine's rector.
Brick said he expects every one of the shrine's 1,500 seats to be filled for the 4:30 p.m. Mass.

The archdiocese announced the April Mass this week, saying Dolan intends it as a gesture of thanks for his elevation to cardinal and for the time he spent in Milwaukee.
Brick's understanding is that Dolan called the archdiocese saying he'd like to say Mass in Milwaukee, and that he specifically asked to do so at Holy Hill.

Not a political ping this time. Former Archbishop Dolan is a favorite of mine.
He has that warm Irish personality that makes everyone comfortable and feel that they are friends, yet he earns respect for his ability to preach and live the Catholic Faith.
He still prays (recorded) the Rosary on Catholic Relevant radio in Milwaukee.
And I love his voice. My other car has Serius Radio and I caught him on Catholic Radio from NY the other day.
Relevant Radio is one of my favorites.
The Holy Hill Shrine in Hubertus is a beautiful, holy place. I wonder if he’ll visit his hometown of St. Louis for a similar mass somewhere, perhaps the Black Madonna Shrine in Eureka, or his home parish, Holy Infant in Ballwin, or maybe the Old Cathedral near the arch.
I’ll bet he will. Of course he still has family in the Milwaukee area. Are there siblings in St. Louis?
I hope ordinary people can get in at Holy Hill. I’d sure love to go. I’d love to call him Cardinal to his face. (A lot of us have been calling him Cardinal behind his back for years. Everybody loves him.)

Most of his family is in St. Louis. He has only one brother in Milwaukee.

I heard that the NY media covering him during the first several days or weeks after his arrival asked him if there was anything he wanted to condemn. As the story goes, he looked at them quizzically, and asked them to repeat the question. After they did, he laughed and said, ‘OK, I’ll condemn instant mashed potatoes and light beer.’ A great answer. He loves to laugh and is full of joy. We are so very proud of him here and love him very much.
"When he becomes the preacher, they listen to him with a totally different sense, because they are listening to someone that they respect, that they love, that they feel they know well. And I think that's the power of his preaching. He's never aloof, never distant. He can make an entire archdiocese — as I think he did in Milwaukee and he did here in St. Louis — feel they know him personally and well," Msgr. Turek said.
That is absolutely how he was in Milwaukee. My husband and I toured Ireland with his brother Bob and wife Beth. We were there over the infamous 9/11. The following summer (2002) we attended Irish Fest Mass which Bp Dolan was saying and Bob introduced us to his brother, who had been appointed Abp of Milwaukee but who had not yet arrived here officially. Later, Abp Dolan visited our parish 2-3 times and always greeted us like old friends. If he didn't really remember who we were, he certainly put on a good act. No matter, I consider him to be a great and good friend and always will.
