That is dumb, to get rid of a perfectly good mascot because of some perversion of the language. It’s like saying all women want to prey on younger men, which has to be accepted as ok, so it is offensive to have a cougar for a mascot. Does anybody need a brain?

I wonder what their cheerleaders look like.

Why don’t we just ban words? We don’t want to run the risk of potentially offending someone, somewhere, with a given word. If we ban them all, no one could ever be offended - right?

the principal Mary Bailey worried people would also be reminded of the popular culture use of the word to describe sexually aggressive middle-aged women who attract chase after younger men.

Going into animal names was bound to cause a problem, because, as you can see, the animal is offended being compared to a predatory female human being.

Why not just go back to a name like the Fighting Redskins?

Well of course the ‘school district’ would want the named changed.

After all, where do most of the stories about ‘cougars’ come from?

Can’t have an ‘arrow’ pointing at the schools.. no sir..

Pulled off another internet site:

“Thanks to the tireless efforts of Adam Joshua Smargon, a list of nearly all US college and university nicknames resides on a single web page. With a little programming magic, here is a ranking of the top 10 based on his list:

1. Eagles (58 institutions)
2. Tigers (45)
3. Bulldogs (39)
4. Cougars (32)
4. Wildcats (32)
6. Panthers (31)
7. Lions (30)
7. Pioneers (30)
7. Warriors (30)
10. Knights (26)”

Looks like 32 college presidents better get off their butts and start doing something about their athletic teams’ nickname, lest someone somewhere be offended.

I wonder if Mary Bailey is a “cougar” and personally offended.

It looks like we have our own home-grown maniacs but instead of Islam, their cult is Political Correctness.

If “Cougar” is insensitive to women, what names would be off limits as insensitive to men?

“The Studs”?
“The Well Endowed Ones”?
“The Hunks”?
“The Milquetoasts”?

We need to start a campaign today to make sure these offensive names are never used as sports team monikers.

Not satire? Both the HS I went to and the one my children go to have the cougar mascot, and I never heard anyone thinking about changing either.
