Exactly! We need Rick to stay in the race and give us some kind of option. I hated that Perry left and I sure don't want to lose another one.

He is in now brutal shape, the bank account is approaching red, and he is in tall company on both those points.

“I think he suspends by Monday.
“Why should he?”

Necessity. Santorum won IA, had a good showing at 4th in NH, then got the endorsement of a significant collection of large, national Evangelical groups, and with all that is looking to come in last in SC, where he should be at least #2.

If, in fact, he does come in last in SC, the next stop, in 10 days, will be FL, a much larger and more expensive state than any to date. He simply won’t have the resources to compete effectively. His $ and endorsements will dry up.

These early primaries are about ‘winnowing out’ the crowd, and there are certain markers along the way that a candidate either meets or not. If not, s/he is outta there. If the withdrawal is graceful, like Perry’s was today, the candidate can live to fight another day (or year). That would be particularly true for Santorum, the youngest of this year’s crop of competitors.
