APORKALYPSE NOW

HOUSTON — Texas has been messed with, and now it’s sending in the helicopters.

Starting today, Texans are taking their ceaseless fight against feral pigs to the skies, thanks to the Texas “Pork Chopper” bill, signed by Gov. Rick Perry. Once limited to killing invasive swine on the ground, licensed hunters can now shoot them from helicopters — for a price.

“I’m ready to book a hunt today!” said David Fason, 48, who drove nine hours and paid $350 on a recent weekend to attend a class in Houston — the first of its kind — on how to safely shoot assault rifles at pigs from the air.

There are already two shows on A&E:

American Hogger - featuring a family run business using dogs to capture hogs (and make sausage out of them), and

Lady Hoggers - two ladies use dogs to capture hogs.

Also, an episode of “Sons of Guns” had the gunsmiths create a large caliber gun (with night sights and sound supressor) just for shooting big hogs with a margin of safety.

It takes a lot of more to do damage after getting through 2" of gristle and bone on a 400# hog. I use a .308 or 12 ga with #00. Both do the job quite well. One shot - one kill. Most of the hogs do not weigh 400 lbs, though. About 90% come in about 140 to 250 lbs. Occasionally, the 350 to 400 lb'er will show up, though.

“Is it really a ‘hunt’, when you do it from a helo?”

Shooting from a Helicopter is a lot harder and trickier than shooting from the ground.

A younger relative hunts feral hogs with his bow because there is not that much of a challenge with a 7 mm or 30/06, scoped out from the ground.

Of course with the bow, you had better be quick to reload. Last fall, he popped a big feral hog @ about 60’ with his bow, and the arrow went through both of the hog’s sides of his chest and didn’t bring it down. The 300# plus hog started for my relative. He quickly reloaded and put another arrow in the frontal chest cavity at about 10 yards. The hog with 2/3’s of the arrow in his frontal chest veered away, and went running into a very thick black berry bushes and wasn’t seen. The guide’s dogs refused to go into the thick black berry bushes, and my relative and his quide decided to leave it. The feral hogs that big are not good to eat. The ranchers/property owners want them killed to keep them from destroying their property.

You really think shooting an animal from a helo is the same as hunting like a raptor? They don’t use machines, pilots, radios and firearms, do they? They only get to use their bodies. I have nothing against this, except calling it a hunt. It should be called a culling.

“Huge Feral Hogs Want to Eat You!”

True Dat!

Hogs will even eat each other. Sometimes before they are dead, even. Sort of like HolderPersons grabbing the wallet from a victim they just shot, dontcha see?

I know it’s not easy. I just don’t like calling it a “hunt”

I agree, this shouldn’t be called a hunt. It should be an extermination.

Yeah, I have seen both of those shows. Totally asinine. Just to appease the liberal wackos and raise their ratings not to mention risking life and limb, they hog-tie them instead of disposing of them with a well-placed shot behind the ear. Throw in some cleavage shots and you have a one-year series. I did see them shoot one on American Hoggers when it bolted and they apologized for having to do it. I bet when the camera is off, the lead goes to flying. Those dogs are too expensive to let get torn up. I would rather watch Uncle Ted dispose of them on "Spirit of the Wild" on Outdoor Channel. I refuse to watch that gun show because every other word is profanity. It is worse than watching a hockey game.

I saw one show once (on what channel, I forget) about this crazy dude in Florida hunting them from a tree with spears. He got down on the ground to track one he had hit and it charged him. He was bleeding like a stuck pig, needless to say. I like to spot-and-stalk hunt them on the ground. They make so much racket biting each other on the @#$% that you can hear them for miles.

My preference is a culling. I just don’t consider shooting critters from a helo, to be hunting.

One thing that you definitely don’t want to do is to hit one with your car. They are so low to the ground that they go under the bumper and tear everything up. There have been several people killed in Texas by hitting them while on motorcycles.

Wolves kill sheep for fun. Do you call that hunting? Bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, all of them do the same.

At its most basic and general, hunting is searching for something. Period. In this case, it is searching for a game animal to kill it for sport but hunting also includes extermination and killing for food as long as it involves a search. All that differs here is the means. Hunting is not for sport alone although that has become something of a modern definition.
