Grammar is very important in the understanding of a sentence, especially in a statement of faith. (In the above as posted, I believe that the comma after "Republic" should be deleted.) When I was in 1st grade (1942) the Pledge was:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands;
one nation, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.
After the Korean War, "under God" was added as above. But now, considering the significance of a growing effort to remove any reference to God from the public eye, let me suggest that it ought to be changed to read:
"...one nation, under God indivisible,..."
which would reflect and recognize the fracturing of the spirit of unity around The Flag because of disloyalty to God and Country.
Amen.
Amen.
