Guess what words in that letter will be seized upon by leftists and race-baiters as proof that Republicans don’t like black people?

“Symbolic events”

Although the letter proves that Newt urged Reagan’s team to engage with black voters or face the consequences, and made the same case to other candidates down through the years, they’ll say it was all symbolic and meant nothing.

Newt was talking about political perceptions and the importance of engaging with all parts of society. Attending the NAACP convention would have been symbolic in that it would have shown blacks that Republicans were willing to engage with them on the issues.
